Apple has hinted that it will give Mac Pro aficionados some love with a professional Mac follow-up sometime this year. For Europeans, though, it might not come soon enough: the company has confirmed that it's officially stopping sales of the current Mac Pro in European Union-affiliated countries as of March 1st. Why? Soon-to-be-implemented tougher standards require that companies shield their fans and electrical ports more thoroughly than we see in the existing system, Apple says. While there's no immediate sign of a replacement, prospective customers who want the tower for projects won't be completely left out -- resellers will be free to sell what stock they have after the cutoff date. That might still be small consolation to European pros who need heavier iron for their tasks than an iMac.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Boeing Co posted stronger-than-expected profit on Wednesday as its backlog of orders rose, and said its 2013 forecast assumed no significant impact from the grounding of its 787 Dreamliner jet by regulators.
Shares were up 0.5 percent at 74.10 in early trading.
Aviation safety agencies in the United States and Japan are investigating what caused lithium-ion batteries to burn on two 787 passenger jets earlier this month, prompting regulators to ground the planes worldwide.
Boeing said it is continuing to build the Dreamliner but has halted deliveries, and analysts have raised concerns about the cost of the grounding and for fixing the battery problem on about 125 jets that Boeing has built so far.
"Our first order of business for 2013 is to resolve the battery issue on the 787 and return the airplanes safely to service with our customers," said Boeing Chief Executive Jim McNerney.
Earlier Wednesday, Japan's two biggest airlines said they had repeatedly replaced sub-par lithium-ion batteries on their Dreamliners in the months before the two incidents that led to the 787 groundings. On January 16, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration ordered U.S. airlines to stop flying 787s, and other regulators around the world quickly followed suit.
The comments from All Nippon Airways Co Ltd, the biggest customer of the 787 to date, and Japan Airlines Co Ltd indicated problems with the battery's reliability long before one caught fire on a JAL 787 at Boston's Logan Airport on January 7, and a second battery was badly charred and melted on an ANA domestic flight a few days later.
That flight was forced to make an emergency landing. The two airlines operate 24 of the 50 787s in service. United Airlines is the only U.S. carrier currently flying the 787.
Boeing declined to comment on the latest failed battery revelations, citing an ongoing investigation by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
But in giving its outlook for 2013, the company said its figures assume "no significant financial impact from the FAA directive."
Ken Herbert, an analyst at Imperial Capital, said it was difficult to estimate the impact from the grounding. "It's too early, and too risky, to say," he said, noting there were numerous grounding-related issues for Boeing and for airlines, and still many unknowns.
The NTSB has not yet established a cause for either of the two battery incidents.
Meanwhile, Boeing said net income fell to $978 million, or $1.28 per share, in the fourth quarter, from $1.39 billion, or $1.84, in the year-ago period, when it posted a special tax gain.
Analysts expected earnings of $1.19 a share.
Herbert said wider profit margins from its commercial airplanes helped the company to beat estimates.
But he was disappointed by its 2013 profit outlook of $5.00 to $5.20 a share, compared with his target of $5.60. The figures include pension charges.
The consensus Wall Street estimate was $5.13 a share for 2013, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Revenue for the quarter rose 14 percent to $22.3 billion.
The company said it booked 394 net aircraft orders in the quarter, and that its total order backlog was nearly 4,400 planes valued at $319 billion, a record tally.

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Coral reefs build their structures by both producing and accumulating calcium carbonate, and this is essential for the maintenance and continued vertical growth capacity of reefs. An international research team has discovered that the amount of new carbonate being added by Caribbean coral reefs is now significantly below rates measured over recent geological timescales, and in some habitats is as much as 70% lower.
Coral reefs form some of the planet's most biologically diverse ecosystems, and provide valuable services to humans and wildlife. However, their ability to maintain their structures and continue to grow depends on the balance between the addition of new carbonate, which is mostly produced by corals themselves, set against the loss of carbonate through various erosional processes. Scientists have long known that reef ecosystems are in decline and that the amount of live coral on reefs is dwindling. But the paper, published on DATE TBC in Nature Communications, is the first evidence that these ecological changes are now also impacting on the growth potential of reefs themselves.
Professor Chris Perry of the University of Exeter, who led the research, said: "Our estimates of current rates of reef growth in the Caribbean are extremely alarming. Our study goes beyond only examining how much coral there is, to also look at the delicate balance of biological factors which determine whether coral reefs will continue to grow or will erode. Our findings clearly show that recent ecological declines are now suppressing the growth potential of reefs in the region, and that this will have major implications for their ability to respond positively to future sea level rises.
"It is most concerning that many coral reefs across the Caribbean have seemingly lost their capacity to produce enough carbonate to continue growing vertically, whilst others are already at a threshold where they may start to erode. At the moment there is limited evidence of large-scale erosion or loss of actual reef structure, but clearly if these trends continue, reef erosion looks far more likely. Urgent action to improve management of reef habitats and to limit global temperature increases is likely to be critical to reduce further deterioration of reef habitat."
The team was funded by the Leverhulme Trust (UK), through an International Network Grant. It included scientists from James Cook University and The University of Queensland in Australia, from The University of Auckland in New Zealand, Memorial University in Canada, and the University of Maine in the USA. They examined rates of carbonate production across 19 reefs in the four Caribbean countries of the Bahamas, Belize, Bonaire and Grand Cayman.
They discovered that declines in rates of carbonate production were especially evident in shallow water habitats, where many fast growing branching coral species have been lost. The study compared modern day rates with those measured in the region over approximately the last 7,000 years. In key habitats around the Caribbean, the findings suggested that in waters of around five metres in depth, reef growth rates are now reduced by 60-70% compared to the regional averages taken from historical records. In waters of around 10 metres in depth, the rates are reduced by 25%.
The study also suggests that these key habitats must have a minimum of around 10% living coral cover to maintain their current structures. The amount of cover varies between sites, but some are already below this threshold and are therefore at risk of starting to erode. Given that previous studies have shown that coral cover on reefs in the Caribbean has declined by an average of 80 per cent since the 1970s, this raises alarm bells for the future state of reefs in the region. These changes have been driven by human disturbance, disease and rising sea temperatures, and are only expected to intensify as a result of future climate change.

Jan. 29, 2013 ? A paper published in the February issue of Computers & Geosciences, describes a case study in which an Earth-observing satellite tool, the Tool for High-Resolution Observation Review (THOR), using minimal coding effort, is converted into a practical web-based application, THOR-Online. In addition, a 3D visualization technique is also described in this paper.
Initially only operable from a desktop computer, with the approach outlined in the study, THOR is now accessible online from NASA's Precipitation Processing System website. This allows researchers to remotely examine the 15-year archive of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite data. Efforts to improve THOR have been on-going since the 1997 launch of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite, which carries first space-borne radar capable of observing detailed three-dimensional structure of regions of precipitation inside of storm clouds.
"The 3D display technique can be used to make features of, for example, a hurricane, visually accessible even to those without technical training in meteorology," explained Owen Kelley, author of the study. "The TRMM satellite observed Hurricane Sandy a day before its U.S. landfall affecting New Jersey and New York, among other states. Using this technique, TRMM 3D images of the storm's overflight and other tropical cyclones during the final months of 2012 could be made available through NASA Hurricane Resource Page."
"Addressing an important problem at intersection of the geosciences (remote sensing, hydrology, meteorology) and computer sciences, this article is a poster child example of what we aim to publish in Computers & Geosciences," explains Jef Caers Co-Editor-in-Chief of Computers & Geosciences. "It uses modern computer science paradigms such as the World Wide Web, code re-use and practical graphical user interfaces to address an important geoscience problem."
The approach outlined in the paper may be of interest to other organizations responsible for earth-observing satellites that have custom desktop visualization tools which may need to be converted to online applications for broader usage, or that have 3D datasets that require the development of an interactive visualization tool.

Self improvement is when you work to make yourself a better person, and to ultimately improve your life. To reach your goals with personal development, you must educate yourself on how you can make yourself a better person and decide what works for you and what doesn?t. The article you are about to read will give you plenty of tips to get going on your personal development plan.
Most employers will not care what school or college you went to, they will care that you earned the degree and can do the work. Working with large financial institutions or law firms is an exception to this rule. Truthfully, it?s more crucial that you have obtained a degree and expanded your horizons.
Exercise is not only for people wanting to lose weight. There are tons of reasons to exercise. As you work out, your body will release chemicals necessary to relieving your stress.
TIP! Stay around like-minded individuals. This will help you to have a better attitude and maintain it as well as keeping you away from bad people that aren?t behind your dreams and goals.
You can?t change unless you make a directed, continuous effort to do so. It is important to make any changes that are necessary for growth.
You need to be your highest priority since you can?t please everybody. That doesn?t mean you should become selfish, but rather that you take control of your own emotions. You should never sacrifice your beliefs in the search for happiness.
One part of depression you may not thought of to look at is your diet and increasing the amount of complex carbohydrates that you consume. If you are not getting enough complex carbs, you serotonin levels will be low. You can do this by eating more raw veggies, fruits, nuts, brown rice, whole grains and assorted beans.
TIP! Make sure the goals you set for yourself are small and manageable so you can easily achieve them and develop the lifestyle that will make you happy. Figuring out your weaknesses and doing what you can to deal with them will make you a happier, more satisfied person.
Be ready to take down any ideas you may have, no matter what the setting is. Use a notepad app on your phone or even carry a real notepad with you. Just write down what their idea or thought is and then develop it more when you have the time and are feeling creative.
Strengthening your faith and expressing love are two great self improvement goals. You can not have faith without love. Therefore, it is important that you never become complacent in your faithfulness. Put your faith into action by helping others and loving not only your peers, but yourself as well.
Figure out what you want your life to be and do what it takes to accomplish it. If you lay around all day wishing your life was better but not doing anything to make it better, it will never happen. Make your dreams reality by taking decisive action.
TIP! We all make mistakes which includes making poor food choices once in a while. Stress is as bad for your body as a piece of cake, so remember that life is too short to sweat the small stuff.
Leadership is the cornerstone of personal development. Leadership is generally approached as being influential. Reflect back on your leadership experiences. What experiences have had the greatest impact on your life? What changes have occurred thanks to these events? What do you feel makes you a good team player? When you examine these thoughts, you will become more of a team player and leader.
You must understand that a divide exists between where you currently are, and the place you would like to go. This first step can start you on the way to reaching your goals. If you cannot see this discrepancy, it is unlikely that you will reach your highest potential.
TIP! Consider your personal character attributes when determining what you want to change. Your aesthetics can be changed quicker than your personality can! Clothes and looks are no reflection of the true personality of person.
If you suffer from anxiety, try going to see a movie with a friend. You will be out and about but you don?t have to talk a lot or even see who you?re with most of the time. This will give you the chance to get acquainted with the idea of being around more people.
Stress is one of the biggest road blocks to happiness. When the human mind is preoccupied with a state of stress, damage can be caused to both physical and mental aspects of the body. All of us need to have clear, relaxed thinking to enable us to plan and execute our life?s purpose, and this only happens when we let go of stressful thoughts. Allow yourself a set time during each day that you can relax and empty your mind. Taking a little bit of time for yourself will help you stay calm, and keep your goals in mind.
It is important that you feel comfortable using the abilities that you have. Being different isn?t a bad thing, since we all have different strengths and skills, which makes for an interesting world of personalities. Concentrate on good skills you already have rather than worry about talents you would like to acquire.
TIP! Are you experiencing difficulty meeting romantic partners? Think about looking on the Internet. Up to 40% of couples meet over the Internet nowadays.
You need to have an emergency fund. Many people handle every unexpected expense with a credit card, building up debt. If you put back just a few dollars every week you will quickly build up an emergency fund. Having an emergency fund in place can help provide a safety net throughout all the phases of one?s financial life.
Try writing down goals you want to reach if you want to better yourself. For example, should you want a greater amount of confidence, write about it. Then, brainstorm things that you could do or have done that will improve your confidence. Finally, you will need to put yourself in a situation where you can practice being confident. Developing a plan of attack will make it more likely that you succeed.
When you are trying to improve yourself, you should aim to have a high amount of self-discipline. Learn to exercise restraint over the desires of the flesh to achieve a higher level of self control. Overindulgence, overeating, lust, and selfishness are all base impulses that you can overcome. If you can cut out the negative aspects of your personality you?ll find your entire being becomes healthier and happier.
TIP! Choose one element of your life to focus on improving. You may want to improve multiple aspects of yourself, but keeping a narrow focus makes it easier to define and achieve your goals.
Start each morning believing that it will be better that day than it was the day before. Put the effort that is needed to accomplish this. Steady, unending improvement should be your goal. Try your hardest to achieve something different today than what you achieved yesterday.
Your reaction to a situation can determine your level of stress. Acknowledge and manage your stress by carefully analyzing your circumstances. If a mistake is the issue, there are ways to correct it or cope with living with your mistake. Focus more on your accomplishments instead of your failures.
Avoid going shopping as a form of entertainment or comfort. Shopping your stress away, or ?retail therapy? as some people say, is really more of a stress inducer, because it distracts you from the stress for a while but it all comes back with big bills and interest charges when the bills come in.
TIP! Try to make the most of your time at work and get more done. Take an ample amount of breaks when you are working hard.
Don?t just respect people who have power or something to offer you; treat everyone with respect. The way you deal with people speaks volumes about your character.
Leadership is about exercising authority, but good leaders are humble, too. When rebukes are necessary, be gentle yet firm, and keep in mind that you must be able to serve to be able to lead effectively. A real leader models integrity and upholds the appropriate virtues. These qualities are required in order to lead successfully.
Behind every great champion is an equally great coach. It is important to surround yourself with a positive mentor and coach. Everyone should help one another. This is an important strategy for ensuring that everyone is able to achieve their goals. Behind every successful story, there?s a great mentor.
TIP! Do you drink a lot? Do you use tobacco products or any other harmful things? You should treat your body as if it is a temple. One way to improve your life is by getting rid of any bad habits that you have.
Know the obstacles you face before you hit them. This is very hard for many people to do. In order to change problems you are having, you must identify what they are. It?s easier to move forward if you take care of what is standing in your way.
Find books that inspire you. Everyone?s idea of a positive piece of writing is different. It may be a religious bible, or alternatively a book of inspirational quotes. By keeping something around that you can refer to for encouragement, you will be better able to handle all that life throws at you.
Take care of yourself physically to get the most out of your personal development activities. Just simple things, such as exercise, getting enough rest and a proper diet, will all keep your energy level up and make you feel good enough to be successful in your personal development journey. It might seem easy, but it can prove to be very difficult.
TIP! Focus on the things that you have determined are most important to you. Focus on the more positive things in life because they matter.
As was mentioned earlier, self improvement can help you better yourself. Try different things and select the strategies that work best for your situation. Use the advice in the article and you can take the first step in a journey of self improvement.

If you have had any of your possessions repossessed by the IRS, personal bankruptcy may be an option for you. Although bankruptcy tends to destroy a person?s credit, it?s occasionally the only available option. To find out more about bankruptcy and what it entails, view the following article.
Do not omit any information about your finances, assets or debts when filling out your bankruptcy paperwork. Omissions or errors may cause your case to take more time to resolve, or even be rejected entirely. The most meaningless, innocuous finance or expenditure needs to be listed when you file a claim. Some things to be included are: current loans, valuable vehicles and side jobs.
Compile a list of the money your currently owe. After this, you can file bankruptcy, so make sure this document is accurate. Make sure you go through your records and be sure about the exact amounts. Don?t be careless about this step, as discharge depends on submitting the correct numbers to the court.
Chose the proper moment to make your move. When filing for personal bankruptcy, it is very important that you act at the correct time. In some cases, you should file for bankruptcy right away, but in others, there may be reasons why filing quickly would be a bad idea. Speak with bankruptcy attorneys for a time frame for filing with your situation.
If you plan on filing for bankruptcy, never transfer your assets to another person within one year of filing. Blatantly attempting to hide assets can result in the dismissal of your case. Certain assets are untouchable by creditors. If you have transferred assets recently for legitimate reasons, you will have to wait the required time period before filing for bankruptcy. Attempting to hide assets from the bankruptcy court can only backfire.
After going through bankruptcy, a lot of people think they are being financially responsible if they shun all forms of credit. This is actually a poor idea because credit helps to build good credit. If you don?t ever use credit, your credit history will not improve, and you may not be able to purchase important things like a home and car. One credit card is adequate to begin rebuilding your credit rating.
Don?t kick this can down the road. Delaying the process will not make things better if you have no other choice. Postponing it will only prolong your stress and worsen your current financial situation. Your whole life can be negatively effected. Preceding with the bankruptcy resolutely and concluding the proceedings quickly will bring closure to the entire situation.
Do your research before hiring a bankruptcy attorney. This kind of law is usually where inexperienced attorney?s reside. Try to get a lawyer that has a lot of experience and one that is properly licensed. The Internet can be helpful in investigating an attorney?s disciplinary record, client ratings, and background.
Although it may be difficult to get financing after filing for bankruptcy, it will not be impossible by any means. This is partially true, but your score could be higher than it was before filing. It is important that you make timely payments once you have filed, in order to increase your credit score.
After reading this article, you will know how to file a claim bankruptcy. Don?t stress about the amount of information before you. Take a few moments to ruminate upon these tips. When you think things through, you make good decisions in life.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Legislation that would make Rhode Island the 10th state to allow gays and lesbians to marry faces an uncertain future despite being overwhelmingly approved by the state House.
It could be weeks or even months before the Senate takes up the bill that would make Rhode Island the last state in New England to recognize same-sex marriage, but supporters still celebrated the House vote Thursday night.
Ken Fish, a gay man from Warwick, showed up at the Statehouse hours before the vote to ensure he got a seat in the crowded viewing gallery.
"I wanted to be here to see it," said Fish, 70, "Go back 10 years, even five years, and I wasn't sure we'd ever get here. We're not done yet, but this is a big one."
While the House has a gay marriage champion in Speaker Gordon Fox, who is gay, Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed opposes the legislation.
The 51-19 House vote came after an often emotional debate that touched on civil rights, religion and the nature of marriage.
"This has been a long journey," Fox said after the vote. Fox supported same-sex legislation when it was first introduced in 1997. "Today is a great day. Today ... we stand for equality, we stand for justice."
Nine states and the District of Columbia now allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who supports gay marriage, urged quick action on the bill in the Senate. The governor, an independent, argues gay marriage is an issue of civil rights and the state's quality of life, and said some people may choose other New England states over Rhode Island because of its stance on marriage.
"Now that the House has swiftly acted, I urge Senate leadership to 'call the roll' ? for our economy, for our gay and lesbian friends and neighbors, and for history," he said in a statement.
Advocacy groups on both sides of the issue will now turn their attention to the 38-member Senate, which has never voted on gay marriage legislation.
Chris Plante, director of the state chapter of the National Institute for Marriage, said he's optimistic senators will vote to preserve the state's current marriage laws. He said leaders like Fox and Chafee don't reflect public sentiment.
"Rhode Islanders care about marriage, and they don't want to see it redefined," he said.
Some opponents have suggested placing gay marriage on the ballot as a referendum, but the idea is a nonstarter with Fox and Chafee.
A handful of lawmakers rose during Thursday's debate to criticize gay marriage as a dangerous social experiment. Rep. Arthur Corvese, D-North Providence, warned lawmakers that same-sex marriage was an "irrevocable societal game-changer" that would redefine "the fundamental building block of our community" and could lead to the legalization of polygamy or plural marriages.
"Truth must not be sacrificed on the altar of political correctness," he said. "Is this the vision you want for Rhode Island's future? Is this the future you want for America?"
Supporters in Rhode Island are hoping to build on national momentum after votes to approve gay marriage in Maine, Maryland and Washington. Meanwhile, in Minnesota, voters rejected a proposed state constitutional amendment that would have prohibited gay marriage, the first time such a ballot question has failed in the United States.
Lawmakers who argued in favor of allowing gays to marry warned their colleagues they could wind up on the wrong side of history if they cast a no vote.
"Your grandchildren someday will ask you ... 'How did you vote on marriage equality?'" said Rep. John Edwards, D-Tiverton. "Hopefully you'll be able to say the right thing."
Two years ago, Fox dropped gay marriage legislation after he concluded the bill would not pass the Senate. Instead, lawmakers passed civil unions for same-sex couples. But there has been little interest in the state. In the year since civil unions were first offered, only 68 couples obtained civil union licenses.
Last year, Chafee signed an executive order recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states.

Brit Writers speaks with Paul Templer, author of What?s Left of Me?
Who is Paul Templer?
Despite growing up in Africa in the midst of a vicious civil war, I look?back?fondly upon my childhood. I found it easy to get along and played well with others and for the most part, life was a grand adventure.
After school, I travelled the world seeking the meaning of life ? translation: I toured extensively, held a lot of odd jobs, drank a lot of beer, met some fascinating people, made a lot of mistakes and laughed a lot. I proudly served with the British Army before returning to Africa and a life of safaris and extreme expeditions . . . until a bad day at?the office when I ended up headfirst and waist-deep down the throat of a hippopotamus who was having a temper tantrum.
Nowadays, I live?as a naturalized American citizen?in the U.S.A., largely due to Cupid having no respect for geography. My wife is an?American, as are my three children. Most of my days are filled with writing, speaking,?working with my Foundation and leading a handful of businesses?? as a serial entrepreneur, the only way I?ve been able to hold down a steady job has been to own the companies I work for. My passion is spending time with my family.
?
Why have you written ?What?s Left of Me??
There were times?during the writing process when?I wondered the same thing. The flip answer when I asked myself that question was so that people would stop bugging me?to do so?and?I could make some money.
When I look a little deeper, I found the writing process to be therapeutic and at some point during the process, I?bought into the notion that sharing my entertaining misadventures and the ways I?ve dealt with my lot in life has the potential to inspire?and help?people.
Who should read this book and why?
There are a variety of readers who have let me know that they enjoyed reading What?s Left of Me. I?ve received some great reviews from people who were simply looking for an entertaining page-turner or a human interest adventure story.
I?ve also been quite moved by some of the feedback I?ve received from people who find themselves navigating adversity and change?in their lives?and?are looking for inspiration. ?They?ve let me know that, though my experiences range from the exotic to the mundane, they?re easy to identify with, which makes my responses to my challenges universally applicable.?I?m humbled that my story has evoked both inspiration and motivation and helped people.
?
Tell us more about you ? How long have you been writing for and what are your plans for the future as an author?
After reading one of my blogs, Anne-Marie (my children?s baby-sitter) commented that I wrote pretty well for someone who wasn?t a writer. It got me to thinking about how I?ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I started writing What?s Left of Me in 1996 and it took until 2012 for me to get my act together and let it be published. Anne-Marie and I discussed that, considering my blogs, a few books I?ve contributed to, writing my Keynote speeches and writing the intellectual property we produce at our consulting company, I write quite a lot for someone who, as she says, is not really a writer.
A passion project that I?m currently working on is a?young reader?s version of?What?s Left of Me. I?love?exploring topics like gratitude, kindness, accountability and the opportunities and consequences associated with the choices we make. My three young children and their friends are my research assistants and critics on this project and writing this book?is a lot of fun.
?
What would you like to say to whoever is reading this right now?
If you?re looking for a delightfully entertaining romp that has you?question how you show up in your life?and?at the same time inspires you to move forward more powerfully, peacefully and joyfully, then I?m confident that you?ll?be delighted with What?s Left of Me???go buy it now.
If you know someone who?s going through a tough time at the moment and could use a?pick-me-up ? something entertaining that reveals new ways of looking at and responding to what?s going on in his or her life ?? then go buy a copy of?What?s Left of Me?and give it to the person. ?I?m confident that he or she will be grateful to you.
?
Thank you Paul.

Duke University engineers are layering atom-thick lattices of carbon with polymers to create unique materials with a broad range of applications, including artificial muscles.
The lattice, known as graphene, is made of pure carbon and appears under magnification like chicken wire. Because of its unique optical, electrical and mechanical properties, graphene is used in electronics, energy storage, composite materials and biomedicine.
However, graphene is extremely difficult to handle in that it easily "crumples." Unfortunately, scientists have been unable to control the crumpling and unfolding of large-area graphene to take advantage of its properties.
Duke engineer Xuanhe Zhao, assistant professor in Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, likens the challenge of controlling graphene to the difference between unfolding paper and wet tissue.
"If you crumpled up normal paper, you can pretty easily flatten it out," Zhao said. "However, graphene is more like wet tissue paper. It is extremely thin and sticky and difficult to unfold once crumpled. We have developed a method to solve this problem and control the crumpling and unfolding of large-area graphene films."
The Duke engineers attached the graphene to a rubber film that had been pre-stretched to many times its original size. Once the rubber film was relaxed, parts of the graphene detached from the rubber while other parts kept adhering to it, forming an attached-detached pattern with a feature size of a few nanometers. As the rubber relaxed, the detached graphene was compressed to crumple. But as the rubber film was stretched back, the adhered spots of graphene pulled on the crumpled areas to unfold the sheet.
"In this way, the crumpling and unfolding of large-area, atomic-thick graphene can be controlled by simply stretching and relaxing a rubber film, even by hands," Zhao said.
The results were published online in the journal Nature Materials.
"Our approach has opened avenues to exploit unprecedented properties and functions of graphene," said Jianfeng Zang, a postdoctoral fellow in Zhao's group and the first author of the paper. "For example, we can tune the graphene from being transparent to opaque by crumpling it, and tune it back by unfolding it."
In addition, the Duke engineers layered the graphene with different polymer films to make a "soft" material that can act like muscle tissues by contracting and expanding on demand. When electricity is applied to the graphene, the artificial muscle expands in area; when the electricity is cut off, it relaxes. Varying the voltage controls the degree of contraction and relaxation.
"The crumpling and unfolding of graphene allows large deformation of the artificial muscle," Zang said.
"New artificial muscles are enabling diverse technologies ranging from robotics and drug delivery to energy harvesting and storage," Zhao said. "In particular, they promise to greatly improve the quality of life for millions of disabled people by providing affordable devices such as lightweight prostheses and full-page Braille displays."
