Chevron says Richmond repair timing unknown

RICHMOND, California (Reuters) - Chevron needs a few more weeks to assess damage at its plant in Richmond, California, and does not yet know how long it will need to repair its crude unit after an early August fire damaged the state's second-biggest refinery, its general manager said on Monday.

The 245,000 barrels-per-day plant, which accounts for one-eighth of California's refining capacity, has run at a reduced rate since the fire and has risen only marginally since then, General Manager Nigel Hearne said in an interview.

The lower throughput caused a jump in gasoline prices in California as traders scrambled to find alternative supplies. The outage has left California, which consumes more gasoline than any other U.S. state, more vulnerable to price spikes when any of the other 15 plants in the state have problems.

While investigations of the fire's cause are still under way, the focus has centered on a failed pipe component less than 5 feet long.

Hearne said the pipe had a low-silicon content, making it more susceptible to corrosion, which was understood by its technical staff but not acted upon. "Clearly it wasn't, so the question is why wasn't it," he said.

Chevron found that the 200 feet of piping in question had been inspected in 19 different locations in November 2011, but not the component that failed.

Asked about how long the plant will be down, Hearne said assessments of the damage would need to be completed in the "next few weeks" to establish the timeline for repairs.

"We're still in the process of fully inspecting the plant," he said, including every individual component in carbon steel systems exposed to the same "sulfidation corrosion conditions" that affected the damaged pipe.

Hearne said full access to the refinery had just been opened up by investigators. The supply for the refinery was being provided by both the market and Chevron's other U.S. refineries.

This year, the Richmond refinery, Chevron's oldest, has been celebrating 110 years since it opened.

South, Midwest May Have Highest Rates of Unneeded Antibiotic Prescriptions

Doctors in the South write more prescriptions for antibiotics for older adults than anywhere else in the country, which suggests they are the most prone to prescribe antibiotics for conditions that cannot be treated by the drugs, a new study says.

Using data on Medicare prescriptions, researchers found that 21.4 percent of Medicare patients living in the South, and 19.2 percent of those in the Midwest used an antibiotic at some point over a three-year period. By contrast, the lowest antibiotic use was in the West, where the same was true of 17.4 percent of patients.

The variation remained even when the researchers took into account the patients' characteristics, such as their ages, and the regional rates of the disease for which antibiotics are commonly prescribed.

This suggests that "it is possible that some of the antibiotic use is unnecessary," said study researcher Yuting Zhang, an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

The researchers, whose study was published Sept. 24 in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, acknowledged that it is not clear what level of antibiotic prescriptions is be ideal. The lower use of antibiotics in the West "does not necessarily represent the clinically appropriate use," given that overuse of antibiotics is common, they said.

"Patients should be aware that overuse of antibiotic is common, and the consequence is serious," Zhang said.

She added that people with common colds or other conditions commonly caused by viruses should not ask for antibiotics, which treat only bacteria. And the researchers wrote that "physicians should be extra careful to ensure that they are not prescribing unnecessary antibiotics to older patients."

Antibiotics and health

The overuse of antibiotics is a problem because it increases the chance of bacteria developing resistance to the drugs. Meanwhile, it leads to overspending on prescriptions.

Zhang and her colleagues used data on a random sample of prescriptions filled from the beginning of 2007 until the end of 2009 through Medicare's prescription drug benefit program.

In their analysis, the researchers looked at how antibiotic prescription rates varied over the four quarters of the year. Results showed that in every quarter, antibiotic use was highest in the South. Use was also consistently higher in the Midwest than in the West.

Antibiotic prescriptions increased in the wintertime. Infections that need antibiotic treatment are more common at that time of year, but so are infections that don't stand to benefit from antibiotic treatment, the researchers said. "It is likely that the rates of inappropriate use of antibiotics are also highest in the winter months," they said.

The researchers considered whether the regions with more antibiotic use, which included the Midwest as well as the South, had higher rates of diseases for which antibiotics are commonly prescribed.

"Pneumonia requires antibiotics ? if the proportion of patients with pneumonia in the South is the highest, then perhaps the highest rate of antibiotic use is reasonable. But we didn?t find that," Zhang explained.

In fact, the data showed that the Northeast had the highest rate of bacterial pneumonia infections but the lowest use of antibiotics. "In contrast, the South had the highest prevalence of nonspecific acute respiratory tract infections, for which antibiotics should not necessarily be used," the researchers wrote. Such infections are usually caused by viruses; antibiotics treat only bacteria.

The researchers noted that their results are consistent with those of a 2009 study of younger adults, which also found higher rates of antibiotic use in the South.

What should be done

Exactly why the South had the highest rate of antibiotic prescriptions remains unclear, but it could be due in part to patients there asking for these prescriptions, or to health plan practices or regional education programs, Zhang said.

Unnecessary use in older patients is especially a concern, the researchers said, because older people tend to more susceptible to adverse drug reactions ? for example, antibiotics called quinolones can cause cognitive disturbances ? and because older people may have other health conditions that make them vulnerable to the risks of antibiotic overuse, such as drug-resistant infections, Zhang said.

Pass it on: Prescriptions for antibiotics are most common in the South, which may indicate that unneeded prescriptions are most common there, too.

Genealogy News in Bloomberg Businessweek ? Irish Genealogical ...

An article on Ancestry.com appears in the Sept 24-30 issue of Bloomberg Businessweek.?According to the story,?genealogy ranks second only to porn?as the most searched topic online?? Perhaps less surprising was their report that visitors to online genealogy sites are mostly white women, 55 and older, who browse the Internet from home. Those were two of the statements made by the article. Here are?a few more highlights:

  • President Barack Obama is related, through his white Kansan mother, to one of the earliest slaves in North America.?Obama is also related to Brad Pitt (eighth cousins) and Warren Buffett (seventh cousins, three times removed). Discoveries like these are the work of a subsidiary of Ancestry.com called ProGenealogists.
  • The company?s celebrity research strategy is key to generating buzz. ?Ultimately, yeah, it?s a branding play,? admits Ancestry.com?s PR director. ?The more relationship stories you hear, the more you might be thinking about researching your own family.?
  • Ancestry began in 1983 as a small niche publisher of reference books and has since?grown to have a near monopoly?in the family tree business. Ancestry will net a projected $480 million in 2012, up 189 percent over the last five years.
  • Although market leader, Ancestry.com is not the genealogy industry?s only player. Several for-profit outfits such as MyHeritage.com and Brightsolid are busy building out their collections, but Ancestry.com mostly competes with itself: It owns five of the top 10 genealogy sites on the Net, including RootsWeb.com, Genealogy.com and Archives.com.
  • If you assume families have two kids, each parent will have two children, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren and so on. After 10 generations, or about 250 years, the average person will have 1024 descendants. The article says practically all people of European descent share at least one common ancestor on their family trees sometime within the last 550 years.
  • A computer science professor/genealogy enthusiast was quoted: ?Say you walked into an ancient Egyptian village in 2000 BC and interrupted a peasant making love to his wife, delaying him for five minutes. Then Hitler, Stalin, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Alan Turing, Jane Austen, Abraham Lincoln, name whoever you want, would not exist. They could not exist.??The expert?explains that a different sperm would have won the race, perhaps producing a son rather than a daughter, and the future of the world would be forever changed.

A Note About August 2012 Video Metrix Reporting

With the release of August 2012 U.S. Video Metrix data, comScore introduced three important methodological enhancements to our estimates that will affect data on a go-forward basis. The first enhancement is the incorporation of updated demographic universe estimates based on data from the 2010 U.S. census, which provides an improved accounting of the percentage of the population falling into each demographic segment. The second enhancement is an improvement in comScore?s enumeration survey methodology to better represent persons in cell-phone only households. The third and final enhancement is a new technique to account for cookie rejection in Safari browsers, for sites measured via comScore?s Unified Digital Measurement (UDM) methodology. Due to the effects of the changes to the August 2012 U.S. Video Metrix data, comScore advises caution when interpreting month-over-month trends.

No matter what I talk about, I always get back to baseball: GameThread Jays @ Rays

The quote is from Connie Make, but seems to fit me, no matter what the conversation is, sooner or later I'll turn it back to baseball. But lately, everyone I run into seems to want to tell me how bad the Blue Jays have been. I KNOW.

Anyway, today we get to watch Chad Jenkins make his first major league start. I interested to see how he does. Hopefully he, and the Jays, can keep the Rays under double digits today. It would be nice to keep us within a touchdown or so of the lead.

Some offence would be ok too. I'm kind of feeling sorry for JP, it looks like he could have used more rehab time. He's only had 2 singles since coming back from his injury. Adam Lind has been slumping too, he has more triples (2) than home runs (1) in September. Hard to believe. I guess you could throw a dart at the starting lineup and you'd be likely to hit a player slumping, and put him out of the lineup for the rest of the season. Lawrie's hitting .231 this month. Johnson .196. Escobar .229. Davis .227. Rasmus .231 with 1 home run.

Starting pitchers:

Come on Jays, let's win one, please.

You know the rules, it has been a long season, but lets keep things civil.

Go Jays.

Endeavour lands in LA after aerial tour of California

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Space shuttle Endeavour landed safely at the Los Angeles International Airport Friday after a whirlwind aerial tour around California landmarks.

Strapped to the back of a 747 jumbo jet, the pair touched down around 1 p.m. after a nearly five-hour flyover. One of the crew members stuck an American flag out of the hatch of the jet.

The flyover took Endeavour over the state Capitol, Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood Sign and other icons en route to the Los Angeles airport, where the shuttle will be prepped for a slow-speed journey to its museum home next month.

At the Santa Monica Pier, spectators pointed their cameras skyward and some chanted, "USA! USA!" as Endeavour swooped along the coast.

"Even though it was a few seconds, it was a unique experience to witness history," said Andrew Lerner, 23, of Santa Monica.

Thousands of spectators jammed rooftop buildings and streets in Sacramento, cheering as Endeavour made two loops around the state Capitol. A crowd of schoolchildren squealed in delight during the second flyover.

Matthew Montgomery took a break from his work as a legislative aide and brought his 2-year-old son, Tavion, to see Endeavour airborne.

"I was going to leave him in daycare but thought this is a once-in-a-lifetime deal," said Montgomery, whose aunt was an engineer on the early Apollo missions.

Since Endeavour buzzed by some of the Golden State's most iconic sights, law enforcement and transportation authorities warned motorists not to "gawk and drive."

"We want people to take in this majestic show," Los Angeles police Cmdr. Scott Kroeber said earlier this week. "But if you're driving, please drive and don't try to take in the show simultaneously."

Traffic came to a near stop along a freeway near the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory east of Los Angeles when motorists pulled off to the shoulder to watch. California Highway Patrol officers came through and blared on loud speakers for people to move on.

Extra officers were on duty along the freeways near the airport to make sure traffic flowed smoothly as the shuttle zoomed overhead.

Endeavour returned to its birthplace Thursday after an emotional cross-country ferry flight that made a special flyover of Tucson, Ariz., to honor its last commander, Mark Kelly, and his wife, former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

NASA's shuttle fleet, which retired last year after three decades of flight, was assembled in Palmdale near Edwards Air Force Base where Endeavour took off Friday morning for the aerial tour. The military outpost 100 miles north of Los Angeles served as the original shuttle landing strip and remained a backup site in case of stormy weather at Cape Canaveral, Fla.

"We're so excited to be welcoming Endeavour home in grand style with these flyovers," Jeffrey Rudolph, president of the California Science Center, said earlier this week.

The youngest shuttle, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which blew up during liftoff in 1986. NASA lost another shuttle, Columbia, in 2003 when it disintegrated during re-entry. Fourteen astronauts were killed.

During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles.

On its maiden flight in 1992, a trio of spacewalking astronauts grabbed a stranded communications satellite in for repair. It also flew the first repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope to fix a faulty mirror. But most of its flights ferried cargo and equipment to the International Space Station, which is near completion.

Under White House orders to explore beyond low-Earth orbit, NASA is hitching rides on Russian rockets to the orbiting laboratory until private companies can provide regular service.

Endeavour is the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home. In April, Discovery arrived at the Smithsonian Institution's hangar in Virginia. Atlantis, which closed out the shuttle program, will stay in Florida where it will be towed a short distance to the Kennedy Space Center's visitor center in the fall.

Endeavour will remain at an airport hangar for several weeks as crews ready the shuttle for its own road trip. Unlike Atlantis, it will creep through city streets to the California Science Center near downtown.

Some 400 trees will be cleared along the 12-mile route to make room, a move that has riled some residents in affected neighborhoods. Museum officials have pledged to replant double the number of chopped trees.

(AP) ? Termites, storms and neglect have damaged part of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos' legendary stash of shoes and other vanity possessions, left behind after she and her dictator husband were driven into U.S. exile by a 1986 popular revolt.

Hundreds of pieces of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos' clothing, including the formal native see-through Barong shirts he wore during his two-decade rule, have also begun to gather mold and fray after being stored for years without protection at the presidential palace and later at Manila's National Museum, officials told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The Marcoses fled the Philippines at the climax of the army-backed "people power" revolt, which became a harbinger of change in authoritarian regimes worldwide. Ferdinand Marcos died in exile in Hawaii in 1989 and his widow and children returned home years later.

They left behind staggering amounts of personal belongings, clothes and art objects at the palace, including at least 1,220 pairs of Imelda Marcos' shoes.

More than 150 carton boxes of clothes, dress accessories and shoes of the Marcoses were transferred to the National Museum for safekeeping two years ago after termites, humidity and mold threatened the apparel at the riverside palace. There they deteriorated further as the fragile boxes were abandoned in a padlocked museum hall that had no facilities to protect such relics and that was inundated by tropical storm rains last month due to a gushing leak in the ceiling, museum officials said.

Museum staffers, who were not aware the boxes contained precious mementoes from the Marcoses, opened the hall on the fourth floor of the building after noticing water pouring out from under the door. They were shocked to see Marcos' shoes and gowns when they opened the wet boxes, officials said.

Workers hurriedly moved the boxes to a dry room and some were later brought to a museum laboratory, where a small team of curators scrambled to assess the extent of the damage, a process that may take months given the huge volume of the apparel. Some items have obviously been damaged by termites and mold beyond repair, according to museum curator Orlando Abinion, who is heading the effort.

"We're doing a conservation rescue," Abinion told the AP. "There was termite infestation and mold in past years, and these were aggravated by last month's storm."

"It's unfortunate because Imelda may have worn some of these clothes in major official events and as such have an important place in our history," he said.

Two AP journalists saw a badly tattered box at the museum with damaged and soiled leather bags and designer shoes of Imelda Marcos' bulging out. Termites damaged the heel and sole of a white Pierre Cardin shoe. Other shoes had been warped out of shape or messed by stains.

About 100 of Ferdinand Marcos' Barong shirts were squeezed tight into another box, some still attached to plastic hangers. A white Barong shirt on top, with the colorful presidential seal emblazoned on its pocket, looked disheveled with reddish stains and a sleeve nearly torn off.

Imelda Marcos, now a member of the House of Representatives, was not immediately available for comment Sunday.

Her massive shoe collection, including top U.S. and European brands, astounded the world and became a symbol of excess in the Southeast Asian nation, where many still walked barefoot out of abject poverty.

Ferdinand Marcos' successor, democracy icon Corazon Aquino, accused him of stealing billions of dollars during his 20-year rule and ordered many of his assets seized.

The clothes and shoes of the Marcoses were not among the assets allegedly stolen by them and sequestered by the government following the dictator's fall, according to Presidential Commission on Good Government official Maita Gonzaga. The government has so far recovered $2.24 billion worth of cash, bank accounts and prime real estate from the Marcoses and their cronies, she said.

After the 1986 revolt, Aquino had Imelda Marcos' shoes displayed at the presidential palace as a symbol of the former first lady's lavish lifestyle. The shoes were then removed from public view and stored in the palace basement when Aquino stepped down in 1992.

Imelda Marcos claimed many of the shoes were gifts from Filipino shoemakers in suburban Marikina city, the country's shoemaking capital, for endorsing their products. Marikina officials borrowed 800 pairs of her shoes in 2001 for a shoe museum, which has become a tourist spot. Massive flooding, however, damaged dozens of pairs of Marcos' shoes in Marikina in 2009.

About 765 pairs, including famous brands like Gucci, Charles Jourdan, Christian Dior, Ferragamo, Chanel and Prada, survived the Marikina floods. The shoes still look remarkably new due to meticulous museum care, which includes displaying them in airtight and dust-free glass cabinets in an air-conditioned gallery, away from direct sunlight. The shoe collection draws a daily crowd of 50 to 100 Philippine and foreign tourists, who almost always leave in awe, museum manager Jane Ballesteros said.

"The first word they utter is 'Wow,' followed by the question, 'Was she able to wear all of these?'" Ballesteros said. "When I say, yes, look at the scratches on the soles, the next reaction is, 'Really?'"

"It's amusing," Ballesteros said. "Her shoes never fail to astound people years after."

Nunavut's mysterious ancient life could return by 2100 as Arctic warms

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Global climate change means that recently discovered ancient forests in Canada's extreme north could one day return, according to Alexandre Guertin-Pasquier of the University of Montreal's Department of Geography, who is presenting his findings at the Canadian Paleontology Conference in Toronto today.

"According to the data model, climate conditions on Bylot Island will be able to support the kinds of trees we find in the fossilized forest that currently exist there, such as willow, pine and spruce. I've also found evidence of a possible growth of oak and hickory near the study site during this period," Guertin-Pasquier said. "Although it would of course take time for a whole forest to regrow, the findings show that our grandchildren should be able to plant a tree and watch it grow."

The fossilized forest found on Bylot Island in Nunavut is between 2.6 and 3 million years old according to estimations based on the presence of extinct species and on paleomagnetic analyses. Paleomagentic analysis involves looking at how Earth's magnetic field has affected the magnetic sediment in rocks -- like a compass, they turn to follow the magnetic poles. Scientists can use this information to date rocks as the history of the movement of the magnetic poles is relatively well known.

Wood samples in the ancient forest have been preserved throughout the eons in peat and by permafrost. "We studied the sediments in the forest and discovered pollen that are usually found in climates where the annual average temperature is around 0 degrees Celsius or 32 Fahrenheit," Guertin-Pasquier said. By comparison, current average conditions on Bylot Island are around -15?C ( 5?F). The samples were taken from few drill holes 10 cm in diameter of one to two metres deep. The harshness of the Arctic winter and the remoteness of the forest mean that scientists have very little opportunity to delve into its secrets.

Even during the summer, the Guertin-Pasquier and his colleagues had to endure extreme conditions such as 80 km/h winds. "There is so much mystery that surrounds this forest -- for example, how these trees managed to survive the relentless dark of the Arctic winter," he said, adding that the next steps for this line of research could include looking more closely at other plant remains in order to get a better understanding of what the local flora was.

This research was financed in part by the Polar Continental Shelf Program, Fonds de recherche du Qu?bec -- Nature et technologies, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada programs.

Wild Times in the Restaurant Business (BKW, YUM, KKD, MCD ...

Sometimes the ?Global Community? experiences some very rough patches because of economies and capitalism being so closely ties together; it?s a small world, and U.S. restaurant brands like Burger King Worldwide Inc (NYSE:BKW), Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM), Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (NYSE:KKD), and McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) can be viewed by some as ?western outposts? which is true even if all of the employees are local citizens.?

Politics, culture, and religion to the side, a CNN story this morning on YUM, the world?s largest restaurant company with nearly 38,000 KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell restaurants in more than 120 countries said the fast food giant would be temporarily closing all of its KFC in Pakistan due to anti-American protests.?

Other publicly traded companies like Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, McDonald's, and Burger King also have ?exposures? in Pakistan as well as privately held fast food chains like Subway and Hardee?s.

Reportedly Yum! Brands spokesman Christopher Fuller has said, ??"Our KFC restaurants in Pakistan are closing as a precautionary measure." And, ?? They will continually monitor the situation to decide when to re-open." There is no offical statement on the YUM web site.

I think this is a very, very smart move: Wait until things settle down and reduce the risk.

KFC has more than 60 restaurants in 21 Pakistani cities.?

Angry mobs have attacked a KFC restaurant and a Hardee's and a Krispy Kreme in Tripoli, Lebanon. Hardee's Arabia about 200 restaurants in the Middle East and North Africa.

Until cooler heads prevail I think it wise to reduce any risk of employee injury on a store-by-store basis, company-owned or franchisee and the YUM action could inspire the other chains to temporarily close a unit here and there.

YUM is trading up at the time of this writing in the $67.78 range.?

I haven?t, don?t, and do not intend on holding any of the companies mentioned in this article.

Sony Reader PRS-T2

Sony's latest ebook reader, the Reader PRS-T2 ($129.99 direct) , is an unfortunate victim of timing. It's a nice device, shrewdly updated from last year's Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1 , with faster page refreshes and a sleeker design. But Sony came to the table this time around missing a key feature: backlighting. Now that the industry's top two ebook reader manufacturers, Amazon and Barnes & Noble, make backlit readers in this price range, Sony's lack becomes a deal breaker.

Design, Screen, and Reading
Last year's Reader was a nice piece of hardware, and the PRS-T2 continues the trend. It measures 6.9 by 4.4 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.9 ounces. It's smoother and less busy looking, thanks to newly integrated membrane buttons along the bottom, and a slight taper to the frame. It's also light for a touch-screen ebook Reader; about an ounce lighter than the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch With GlowLight, and an ounce and a half lighter than the new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. You can get one in a red, white gloss, or black matte finish; all models have soft touch back panels.

The 6-inch E Ink Pearl V220 touch screen is a gem. Its specs are typical, at 800-by-600-pixel resolution and with 16 shades of gray. But it offers high contrast, a nice selection of sharp fonts and font sizes, and?the best part?it never blanks the screen out at all for page refreshes, which are quick and unobtrusive. Sony also smoothed out the zoom feature. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, there's no backlight, unlike the Kindle Paperwhite and the Simple Touch With GlowLight. Sony does, however, make a nice folio case with an extendable light for $49.99 and one without the light for $34.99.

The home page is a step up from what you get on the Amazon Kindle, making it easy to find your books and organize them. While reading, you turn pages by swiping a finger to the left or right, or by using one of the two hardware buttons on the bottom left underneath the screen. There are no side-mounted page turn buttons, and you can't just tap the screen in a certain quadrant to turn pages. You get a choice of seven fonts and eight font sizes, all of which look crisp. You can adjust the contrast via a series of customization options, though none of the alternatives looked great. There are also 2-column and 3-column split views, as well as a landscape mode.

Reader Store, Other Features, and Conclusions
For shopping and downloading books, you get built-in Wi-Fi; there's no 3G option. Sony's Reader Store still trails what Amazon and Barnes & Noble offer. It's not terrible by any means, but it offers nowhere near the level of discovery and top list options you get with the two leading ebook vendors. The Discover tab, for example, just breaks down genre categories and has a few lists like "hidden gems," but nothing resembling the wealth of user-created content and editors' picks you'll find on Amazon.

On the plus side, the Reader supports ePub, PDF, and TXT files; Amazon still refuses to support the widely used ePub format. With the Sony Reader PRS-T2, you can borrow books from more than 15,000 public libraries across the country. There are no ads, like the Nook Simple Touch, but unlike all of the new Amazon Kindles.

Unlike other ebook readers, the Sony Reader comes with a stylus. It lets you mark up pages, make notes, and even draw. You can underline sentences, for example, which is something you can't do on the Kindle or Nook (at least with a pen-like stylus). There's nowhere to put the stylus inside the Reader, though; I imagine most people will just leave it in the box, although if you're the type that likes writing in the margins, this is a good model to consider.

Sony includes two English-language dictionaries. There's also Facebook and Evernote integration; you can snip a passage and post it to either service right from the Reader. Sony says the battery lasts for up to two months. You get 2GB of internal storage, with 1.3GB free for your books, plus a microSD card slot that lets you expand storage up to 32GB further. The slot also make it much easier to sideload PDFs, ePub books, and other materials. Sony also includes a free offer for the first Harry Potter book in the Pottermore Shop.

Sony, who was once a player in the ebook space, now seems to be iterating within its own world, devoid of competitors. The Reader PRS-T2 is the best ebook reader the company has produced to date, but it trails the competition, and even costs more on a feature-by-feature basis. The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite and Barnes and Noble Nook Simple Touch With GlowLight both have clumsier names than the Sony Reader PRS-T2, but they have screens that light up for reading in the dark, plus more robust ebook stores. The basic Nook Simple Touch without the edge-lit GlowLight screen cost $30 less, and with the lighting it's $10 more. The Kindle Paperwhite with ads is $10 less, while the version without ads is $10 more. If you're loyal to Sony, the Reader PRS-T2 is nice, but I can't see many new customers choosing it over the Kindle or the Nook.

Helpful Parent/Teacher Conference Questions ? VERITAS WISE ...

Catherine Brown is part of our Veritas WISE Council.

We are about to enter one of my favorite times of the year: parent/teacher conferences. While I remember dreading what my teachers might say about me when I was a student (talking too much in class or passing notes anyone?), I LOVE this opportunity as a parent.

Why? Because parent/teacher conferences are an opportunity to pause and take a serious look at what?s going on with your student socially and academically. I like the teachers? input on whom they think God made my children to be, strengths, weaknesses, and all. My boys are different outside of our home than they are with me ? a change in circumstances bring out different aspects of their personality ? and I like hearing about this from another vantage point.

My favorite parent/teacher conference so far has been when one of my boys? teachers enlightened me to an elaborate scheme she had uncovered to keep me from finding out about a note that was supposed to come home for signature. This child of mine had gone to pretty great lengths to ?lose? the paper so I wouldn?t know that he had been a behavior challenge for the teacher. The teacher and I had a good chuckle, and we collaborated on how to work with my child to help him have more self-control. I appreciated this teacher for loving my kids enough to tell me hard things.

A few questions to consider asking at your parent/teacher conference:

  • What is my child like at school? (We all know that they are different in the school environment than the home.)
  • What does my child do that surprises you?
  • What is my child reluctant to do?

Be sure to share with your teacher how you have been assisting your child in a particular subject (i.e. writing or math), asking questions like:

  • What is the next step of independence that is grade appropriate for my child at this point?
  • Am I helping sufficiently and appropriate to his/her grade level?
  • Request input for specific ideas to help the student to go to the next level of independence of self-management and self control to continue your child?s development as a Kingdom citizen.
  • What can I do to support you (the teacher) as we team together to disciple my child in the way he should go?

In several years at Veritas, I have never left a parent/teacher conference lacking confidence that my kids? teachers love my boys and want the same thing I do for them, namely that they be the best they can at whom God made them to be. This opportunity with our teachers is such a blessing!

Pray for your teachers and ask the Lord to reveal what you need to know to be a better parent also. And don?t forget to laugh a little, too!

One of the stock answers students are encouraged to make when describing the pitfalls of high inflation is its link with increasing the burden on the poorer sections of society. ?The argument goes that periods of high inflation are not traditionally matched by an equal increase in benefit payments. ?This has not been the case in recent years in the UK - benefits have been rising at a faster rate than inflation, even during its upwards blip of recent years. ?Now the argument has reverted to one of how the cost of benefit payments have become excessive for a Government attempting to reduce its deficit and bring spending under control. ?Reports by the BBC and covered by the?Guardian today??have suggested that the Government is about to break this link.

By reducing the link to inflation the Government hopes to reduce some of its costs - but is this something that the wider public will see as fair? ?Average earnings are not increasing at the same rate as inflation so those who are in paid employment are already feeling the pinch when it comes to consumption and might feel that those without jobs are no more worthy of an inflation-beating increase. ?However, unemployment benefits are considerably lower than average wages so the move will lead to a reduced 'real income' of a group within society who are already?relatively?poor and could 'fatten' out the Lorenz curve analysis of inequality within the UK. ?The Government have regularly argued that the burden of deficit reduction should be carried by a wide cross-section of the community and will point again to the?controversial?reduction or removal of Child Benefit payments to higher-earning families?that is about to come into play in January 2013 as an example of how they are attempting to spread that load. ?The other big question is how much further strain this policy would put on the relationship between the Coalition partners as the Liberal Democrats are unlikely to view this policy favourably.
