We are about to enter one of my favorite times of the year: parent/teacher conferences. While I remember dreading what my teachers might say about me when I was a student (talking too much in class or passing notes anyone?), I LOVE this opportunity as a parent.
Why? Because parent/teacher conferences are an opportunity to pause and take a serious look at what?s going on with your student socially and academically. I like the teachers? input on whom they think God made my children to be, strengths, weaknesses, and all. My boys are different outside of our home than they are with me ? a change in circumstances bring out different aspects of their personality ? and I like hearing about this from another vantage point.
My favorite parent/teacher conference so far has been when one of my boys? teachers enlightened me to an elaborate scheme she had uncovered to keep me from finding out about a note that was supposed to come home for signature. This child of mine had gone to pretty great lengths to ?lose? the paper so I wouldn?t know that he had been a behavior challenge for the teacher. The teacher and I had a good chuckle, and we collaborated on how to work with my child to help him have more self-control. I appreciated this teacher for loving my kids enough to tell me hard things.
A few questions to consider asking at your parent/teacher conference:
- What is my child like at school? (We all know that they are different in the school environment than the home.)
- What does my child do that surprises you?
- What is my child reluctant to do?
Be sure to share with your teacher how you have been assisting your child in a particular subject (i.e. writing or math), asking questions like:
- What is the next step of independence that is grade appropriate for my child at this point?
- Am I helping sufficiently and appropriate to his/her grade level?
- Request input for specific ideas to help the student to go to the next level of independence of self-management and self control to continue your child?s development as a Kingdom citizen.
- What can I do to support you (the teacher) as we team together to disciple my child in the way he should go?
In several years at Veritas, I have never left a parent/teacher conference lacking confidence that my kids? teachers love my boys and want the same thing I do for them, namely that they be the best they can at whom God made them to be. This opportunity with our teachers is such a blessing!
Pray for your teachers and ask the Lord to reveal what you need to know to be a better parent also. And don?t forget to laugh a little, too!
