Taping of NBC's 'Fashion Star' halted by picketers

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Union picketing has brought a temporary halt to second-season production of the NBC reality show "Fashion Star."

About 70 members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees picketed the show Saturday at Hollywood Center Studios, prompting producers to cancel a taping and dismiss a studio audience.

IATSE official Vanessa Holtgrew told the Hollywood Reporter the union was striking against the show until a contract is reached.

The union allows members to work on the non-union "Fashion Star," but they get no pension and health benefits without a union contract.

IATSE is fighting to keep a foothold as union-heavy productions like feature films in Los Angeles increasingly give way to productions that tend to be non-union like reality shows.

NBC and the show's three production companies had no immediate comment.

Stop Bullying the Compounding Pharmacy | VitalityLogix

In the wake of the meningitis outbreak stemming from theNew EnglandCompoundingCenter?s methylprednisolone, the spotlight is suddenly on this small but important sector of the retail pharmacy market.

Compounding pharmacies specialize in making customized formulations of existing medications to fit special needs of their patients. This ranges from simple customization of a flavored antibiotic mixture for a child or as complex as chemotherapy for sterile infusion into the epidural space (spine). The NECC made a formulation from a common steroid used for spine injection for patients with back pain. This batch became contaminated with fungus and caused deadly meningitis in dozens of cases. Sounds bad, right?

Well, let?s put this into perspective. While this incident is undoubtedly a terrible and unfortunate event (and my sympathies go out to those affected by this event), it pales in comparison to the social and financial cost of Big Pharma?s practices and incidents. Let?s examine a few examples.

Sibutramine (now off the market) was developed as a treatment for obesity and was approved by the FDA, only to be pulled from the market after killing thousands of people from cardiovascular events. This drug underwent the requisite randomized controlled trials (which then became the focus of a Senate committee review) and after several years on the market it was withdrawn by the manufacturer under pressure from the FDA (the same agency that approved it a few years before).

Erythropoetin Stimulating Agents, now at the center of the hot-off-the-presses USADA and federal report of the Armstrong dropping scandal, was developed as a treatment for anemia. It was, and is extremely effective. It reduced fatigue, improved quality of life, improved exercise capacity (and illegally made its way into the bodies of countless athletes, of which Lance Armstrong has been made an example of). The manufacturer reaped the financial rewards of their discovery. Now the drug carries a black box warning (something the FDA puts on a drug to warn prescribers and consumers of its danger) for increased risks of death from cardiovascular events such as strokes, heart attacks and blood clots in a wide range of patients, including those simply undergoing surgery and taking this drug.

Estrogen and Progestin hormone replacement therapy became a popular treatment for menopause in the late 1990s and beyond, until the drug-sponsored Women?s Health Initiative trial, along with a few others, reported increased risks of breast cancer after tens of thousands of women were already prescribed the drug. This led to a black box warning, a very embarrassing and financially costly situation for the manufacturer and had far-reaching implications for menopause treatment henceforth. This drug study is now the focal point for opponents of HRT for women. This study and HRT became a hot topic for compounding pharmacies and Big Pharma.

The Women?s Health Initiative was the study of a single drug that, like most pharmaceutical agents is completely unlike our own innate physiology and therefore exerts adverse events when introduced into the human body. While bio-identical hormones have been around for many years, they are not amenable to patent since the structure is already part of human physiology and thus Big Pharma has little interest in bio-identical hormones as a commercial venture. Bio-identical hormones are largely made by compounding pharmacies into customized, patient specific creams. Big Pharma generally has nothing to gain from this, just like most of the other compounded products. Big Pharma is interested in patents, profits, and protection of their market share. And there is no reason to blame them for this as they are a business and a business needs to profit. However, their business deals with human lives.

In the wake of the negative Women?s Health Initiative and the growth of the compounded bio-identical hormone market (supported by encouraging trials from Europe), extensive lobbying efforts were exerted on the FDA and medical associations to come out against bio-identical hormones and compounding pharmacies as an unsafe alternative to the traditional Big Pharma methods. Claims were made that compounded bio-identicals are not safer than the Big Pharma products (and are often dangerous) and that there is no evidence to support their use. That is (and was) just not true. Large studies have been conducted inEuropeclearly supporting lower breast cancer risks and possibly even null risks in women using bio-identical compounded HRT. The lobbyists, politicians, and many medical groups jumped to support Big Pharma and bully the small compounding pharmacists with faulty claims and skewed evidence.

Yes, the compounding pharmacies need licensing, oversight, and regulation. But when you compare the damage inflicted by compounding pharmacies and Big Pharma, it?s like comparing the populations ofVatican CityandChina.

Compounding pharmacies serve a vital role in the retail pharmacy market and provide a fundamental service for many practitioners and patients alike. How do you treat a cancer patient with mouth sores from chemotherapy that are so bad that he cant even swallow water? A compounding pharmacist developed a pain-relieving and sore coating mouthwash. It can only be compounded. How do you infuse chemotherapy into the spine of a 3 year old child? A compounding pharmacist, under sterile conditions, has to make a formulation for that purpose. How do you give someone with a fear of needles an injectable medication? Compound it into a nasal spray. How do you effectively treat menopause while minimizing the breast cancer risks and providing an alternative to Big Pharma products? Compound bio-identical HRT.

The problem is that compounding offers patients and practitioners an alternative to Big Pharma and that?s bad for business. I?m not blaming Big Pharma ? they have accomplished amazing things and saved countless lives in generally safe ways. But they are an aggressive, highly lobbied and connected business that will attack any and all competition, often to the detriment of patients and practitioners alike.

So let?s put this NECC incident into perspective and treat it for what it is ? an unfortunate sentinel event (defined by the Joint Commission as an unexpected occurrence involving death or serious physical or psychological injury). According to the Joint Commission website ?Such events are called ?sentinel? because they signal the need for immediate investigation and response.? Rather than bully compounding pharmacies into extinction and financial ruin, this NECC incident should prompt politicians, regulators, and medical watch groups, and medical professional organizations to support compounding pharmacies in developing, instituting and enforcing guideline for safe practice. So let?s stop bullying and start working together to make sure this is a lesson that leads to change and improvement rather than a witch hunt.

Baucus, Tester urge EPA to finish Libby risk study

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? Montana lawmakers urged the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday to push forward with a proposed asbestos safety standard that will guide the cleanup of a mountain town where hundreds have died from exposure to the dangerous material.

U.S. Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester said residents of Libby have grown frustrated waiting for a pending risk study to be completed. And the two Democrats accused chemical giant W.R. Grace Inc. of trying to cloud the science on the issue.

That comes after The Associated Press reported last month that Grace pressed for the study to be delayed.

The company mined asbestos-containing vermiculite in Libby for decades. The EPA's proposed standard concludes even a tiny amount of the material can lead to lung problems. It would be 5,000 times tougher than the standard used in past cleanups addressing airborne asbestos.

Maryland-based Grace has objected to the EPA's proposal, suggesting sites across the country could be subjected to costly cleanups.

But Baucus and Tester wrote in a Thursday letter to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson that it was time to move forward with the risk study. They blasted Grace for weighing in against the EPA proposal and alleged company officials had "traded profits for lives" in Libby.

Health officials say hundreds of people have been killed in Libby and many more sickened by exposure to asbestos dust. The material came from the Grace mine outside town and processing plants along the Kootenai River.

"We are not surprise to find Grace trying to cloud the science or hide behind the speculative liability of other property owners," the senators wrote. "Whatever the state of cleanups at Libby and other contaminated sites around the country, We must face the reality of how toxic Libby (asbestos) really is."

The ongoing Superfund cleanup in Libby has cost at least $447 million since 1999 and is expected to last several more years. The town of about 3,000 people is about 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

W.R. Grace spokesman Greg Euston said Thursday that the company would not comment on the senators' remarks.

In public testimony and filings with the EPA, Grace has argued lung problems considered a sign of asbestos disease can be confused with other health issues such as obesity. The company maintains that the science used by the EPA to craft its proposal was flawed and has urged more research.

Manufacturing and trade groups and federal agencies including the White House Office of Management and Budget also have questioned the EPA proposal. They said the low threshold falls below even background asbestos levels seen in parts of the country.

An EPA spokesman in the agency's regional office in Denver referred questions to agency headquarters in Washington, D.C., where officials did not return messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The EPA is to make a final decision on the standard for Libby sometime next year.

Authorities shift focus, seek apparent kidnapper

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (AP) ? Authorities have shifted their focus from searching for a missing 10-year-old girl to appealing for help in tracking down her apparent kidnapper, as concern mounts in a Denver suburb where the girl disappeared a week ago and a body was found.

Police on Friday expect to positively identify a body found in a park seven miles from where Jessica Ridgeway went missing Oct. 5. Police have not linked the body to Jessica or even revealed if it belongs to a child. The body found at Pattridge Park in Arvada was "not intact," which has delayed identification, police said.

Notably missing Thursday were more appeals by authorities to spread word of Jessica's disappearance via social media. Instead, the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit released a list of changes that a person committing a crime against a child would exhibit. Among them: sudden differences in appearance, missed appointments, being absent from work, or leaving town with no explanation.

"It could be your boss, it could be your friend, and ultimately it could be your family member," FBI spokesman Dave Joly said. "Bring this information to law enforcement and let us vet that to a close. If that person is not the suspect, 'Thank you for your call.' Next lead."

Joly said agents are searching for a man, based on statistics for this type of crime.

Retired FBI behavioral analyst Clinton Van Zandt told The Associated Press that some things to look out for include a person suddenly growing a beard, cutting their hair or doing other things to change their appearance. Other clues are activities that are out of character, such as a person who may have detailed their car when he normally would have only washed it, Van Zandt said.

Now, authorities just need somebody to have noticed and contact police, Van Zandt said.

As for the lack of information being released by authorities, it's part of the search for a suspect, Van Zandt said.

"Whoever is responsible would be watching this very closely," Van Zandt said, and procedure would be to release information "that will drive the offender one way or another."

Police have ruled out as suspect Jessica's parents ? Sarah Ridgeway, who lives in Colorado, and Jeremiah Bryant, who lives in Missouri ? and have said they believe Jessica was kidnapped by an "unknown suspect."

Jessica's mother last saw her daughter walking to a park in Westminster to meet friends to walk to school. The girl never arrived at school, setting off a frantic search by hundreds of law enforcement officials and residents.

"It's so close to home," said Chelsea Bozsak, a senior at nearby Standley Lake High School, where Jessica's cousin attends classes.

"That it could have happened to anyone in the community is scary," she said.

Courtney Sullivan, also a senior at Standley Lake, said her father spoke to her and her younger brother about Jessica's disappearance.

"He's definitely talked to us about being more careful about our surroundings. You could see why," said Sullivan, a cross-country runner who often runs on neighborhood streets. "I'm running in places where there's lights, busy roads, where I can get to someplace if I need to," she said.

Fliers about the fifth-grader were posted on nearly every house in Jessica's neighborhood of modest, two-story homes with single-car garages. Purple ribbons, Jessica's favorite color and a symbol of hope for her return, were tied around trees.

It was a lively area where children played outdoors, said another neighbor, Luis Pena, but since Jessica disappeared, parents are keeping their children inside and people look at each other with suspicion.

"Nobody trusts anybody anymore," he said.

The only real clue police have revealed in Jessica's disappearance is the discovery over the weekend of a backpack and water bottle that she had with her when she disappeared. Police won't discuss what was found in the bag or test results on it.

The items were found in the town of Superior, some six miles from Jessica's home.

Additional police were sent to Jessica's school, said Lynn Setzer, spokeswoman for Jeffco Public Schools. The district has its own security officers at other middle schools and high schools.

Steve Saunders, a spokesman for nearby Adams County schools, said the district is trying to strike a balance between reassuring students and their parents that they are safe, while encouraging them to be vigilant.

Saunders said the district has security officers at all middle schools and high schools, but not elementary schools. He said the district will seek more help if authorities believe it is warranted.

Luke Bryan brings the Party home - On Nashville - The Tennessean

Luke Bryan (photo: Larry McCormack / The Tennessean)

Five years ago, Luke Bryan had just scored his first No. 1 song as songwriter for his work on Billy Currington?s ?Good Directions.? And the ink wasn?t even dry on his first record deal.

Today, he?s got five No. 1 singles of his own and is planning his first arena tour for 2013.

?With me, I?ve been lucky where all of my steps have come as they should, kind of gradual,? Bryan said during a phone call from a tour stop in California. ?With this (arena tour), it?s been a gradual, gradual climb where it?s time for that to be happening for me now. It?s not overwhelming for me. It?s really fun and exciting. Now, we put that focus in and kind of remember what got us here and try to amplify that.?

Country music fans can get a free peek at what Bryan?s headlining tour might be like Wednesday when the ?Drunk on You? singer headlines the Capitol Street Party 5.

The event has moved from its previous home on Demonbreun Street to Broadway between First and Second avenues. Labelmates Jon Pardi and Kelleigh Bannen will open the show, which is expected to draw more than 12,000 people.

?We started the Capitol Street Party five years ago as a forum to let the fans and the music community celebrate the great music that makes Nashville Music City and our home,? says Cindy Mabe, senior vice president of marketing at Capitol Records Nashville. ?The economy has certainly taken a hit these past five years, and it was a way for us to reinvigorate this community as the place where great music is made and celebrated by offering free concerts by some big headliners and great new talent.?

    ?One of the best?

Bryan, who is nominated for male vocalist of the year and album of the year at the Nov. 1 CMA Awards, plans to deliver his entire hit-laced, high-energy show with his full stage set for the street party crowd. He feels that playing shows like the street party, as well as his current Farm Tour of rural towns, helps him to figure out what elements he wants to include in his arena tour next year.

?We are looking at stage setups and how many buses it?s going to take and how many trucks to haul it around and the lighting and trying to pick new songs and new things,? he says of the planning process. ?So we?re going to get through this year and spend the off season thinking about how we?re going to do things and how much money it?s going to take to put it on and figuring out the way to put on the best show out there.?

Bryan got plenty of practice playing some of the largest arenas in the country this year as the second act on Jason Aldean?s tour. Aldean situated his stage in the middle of the arena and sold seats on every side. The setup allowed Bryan to push himself even more as an entertainer, and Aldean saw his friend come into his own over the course of the tour.

?Luke is one of my best friends in the world ? honestly,? Aldean says. ?And I think Luke could have gone out and headlined his own thing this year, but he chose to go out with us. He?s at a point where he?s ready to do his own thing. He?s had a monster year this year, and his show has come a long way from when he was out with us two years ago to what it is now. Just as an entertainer in general, he?s come a long, long way.

?You love to see good things happen to good people, and he?s one of the best people in this business.?

    Album in the works

Another thing that?s going to help Bryan on his headlining tour is new music. The singer recently released ?Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye,? the fourth single off his ?tailgates & tanlines? album, and he says it will be the last from the platinum-selling project. His next single, which will be released after the first of the year, will be from his upcoming album.

?We just want to have a fun new single to kick off the headlining tour,? he says.

Bryan is already hard at work looking for songs for the new album, which will be in stores sometime in 2013. He spends most mornings sitting on his tour bus listening to songs he?s written and others that have been submitted to him from Nashville?s top songwriters.

He says he couldn?t be more thankful that he?s finally reached the point in his career where he rates access to the genre?s best material.

?I?m really feeling good about the album,? he says. ?I feel like we could make the album tomorrow, but I?m still going to work hard and try hard and try to beat what I?ve got. I?m really and truly blessed.?

The Global Arbitrage of Online Work - Bits Blog - The New York Times

If you thought it has been tough to find good work over the last couple of years, just wait.

The old problem was a bad economy, the kind of thing that ends. Trends suggest that we?re heading for a global online arbitrage of opportunity, however, with good workers in bad places able to snatch business away from better-performing environments. If that happens in large numbers, the competition will get really fierce for everyone.

Recently two of the biggest online staffing companies, oDesk and Elance, have released surveys concerning the companies that hire workers over the Internet to do things like write software, and the mindset of online workers themselves.

Between them, oDesk and Elance claim to have more than four million coders, Web designers, marketing professionals and other workers. Some even spot porn on Facebook at a rate of four for a penny. In the second quarter of 2012, oDesk says, its contractors worked over 8.5 million hours, a 70 percent increase over a year earlier. The average freelancer at Elance, meantime, expects to make 43 percent more money in 2013, as more employers come online.

Taken together, the reports indicate a lot of growth ahead in the business, and a lot of talented people looking for work wherever they can find it. oDesk, which surveyed over 2,800 companies that used its service, found that 10 percent of these buyers were college students, and 58 percent described their companies as start-ups.

Not all those young companies will survive, but the habit of hiring online seems baked in; 64 percent of respondents said at least half of their work force would be online by 2015, and 94 percent predicted that in 10 years most businesses would consist of online temps and physical full-time workers.

The range of jobs done online is increasing, too. Workers on Elance said the highest-growing job categories in 2013 would be Web programming, making mobile applications, design, marketing and content writing. oDesk respondents were heavily in those categories too, but also saw employment in customer service, secretarial work and high-level technology development.

?As we move along, we see an increase in all the categories of work,? said Gary Swart, the chief executive of oDesk. ?We now have lawyers, accountants, financial executives, even managers.? The only work unlikely to go online is immediate physical work, like plumbing, he said, adding, ?but even a plumber needs an accountant.?

What he doesn?t need, apparently, is an accountant anywhere nearby. Some 30 percent of the United States citizens working on oDesk are working for overseas companies, Mr. Swart said. An even greater number of overseas people are probably working for Americans, too. In interviews, both companies say the continuing economic troubles in Europe are driving more people to online employment. oDesk has seen a 78 percent growth in hours billed by companies in Britain this year, even though it has never had much of a presence there.

The online work is already changing how some governments think about labor. Last May the government of Bangladesh decided to classify online work as export-related commercial income, free of taxes, instead of as a taxed offshore remittance.

The idea, Mr. Swart said, is to foster the growth of online workers. In other words, if you?re reading this from one of the better parts of the global economy, it?s a good time to think about how to be indispensable.

Another interesting wrinkle from the oDesk survey: Education alone probably won?t help you get hired. Only 6 percent of the survey respondents rated schooling as a ?very important? reason to hire someone. It was the lowest-rated reason to hire someone. Work experience was first, followed by how other people rated the contractor, pay, portfolio of work, references, and scores on skills tests that oDesk offers online.

In the future, having a degree may be helpful, but having a reputation will be even better.

National Grid ramps up search for UK CO2 storage site

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's National Grid Plc is to drill off the coast of Yorkshire in northern England in an attempt to find a suitable site to store carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, giving a boost to a technology tipped to help the UK meet its climate targets.

"This drilling operation is a major step forward in the development of a long-term, large-scale CCS (carbon capture and storage) cluster of transportation networks and storage facilities in the UK," Jim Ward, National Grid's head of CCS, said on Wednesday.

The UK has a target to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050 and the government sees CCS, which collects carbon emissions from power generators and stores them underground, as a key component to achieving this goal.

National Grid and its partner, the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), a joint industry and government body, said the drilling would help assess the viability of storing carbon dioxide in a porous rock formation, rather than in a depleted oil or gas reserve, under the sea.

The project would be complementary to other efforts to find a solution to carbon emissions.

Britain has a 1 billion pound competition to help fund demonstration projects for CCS technologies, which it said has attracted the interest of 16 companies, including National Grid, as well as Centrica Plc and SSE Plc.

The government has not specified which projects have been entered for the competition, but National Grid is working as part of the consortiums for five CCS projects proposed in the UK, according to its website.

Three of these projects, two of which aim to capture emissions at gas-fired power plants and one at a coal power station, are based in Yorkshire.

The winner or winners of the government scheme are expected to be announced by the end of the year.

Though Stephan Bonnar has UFC 153 and Anderson Silva on his mind, he has another concern when he's in Brazil this week. Bonnar's wife Andrea is pregnant and due at the end of the month. Since babies are born on their own schedule and not the UFC's, Bonnar has a contingency plan ready to go for the event Andrea goes into labor earlier than expected.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, UFC president Dana White has offered to fly Bonnar back to his home in Las Vegas immediately after the fight with Silva in his private jet.

Bonnar took White up on his offer, but the Bonnars still have another plan in place, according to TMZ.

Andrea says Stephan?plans to video conference in to his wife's birth if he can't make it in time -- but she adds, "We're trying to avoid even thinking about that."

Their son's birth will be forever connected to Bonnar's last-minute fight with Silva. After featherweight champion Jose Aldo's injury threatened UFC 153, Bonnar stepped up to fight Silva, the middleweight champion and pound-for-pound king at light heavyweight.

There is a chance their son will be connected to Bonnar's most famous fight, as well. As Iole also mentioned, Stephan and Andrea are considering naming their son Griffin Bonnar in honor of the Bonnar-Forrest Griffin bout at the first "Ultimate Fighter" finale.

Claim: A new advertisement endorsed by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney that is airing on KLAS-TV Channel 8 states: "Who will raise taxes on the middle class? Barack Obama and the liberals already have. To pay for government-run health care you'll pay higher taxes and more for your medicine. And their plan includes a trillion dollars in higher taxes, even on the middle class."

Verdict: Partly true and partly misleading. The ad relies on a July 24 report from the politically neutral Congressional Budget Office that analyzed the financial impacts of the June 28 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) backed by President Barack Obama and fellow Democrats in Congress. The Supreme Court ruled that the law that requires most individuals to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty represents a legitimate example of the power of Congress to levy taxes. The CBO estimated that the insurance coverage portion of the law would result in a net cost of more than $1.1 trillion from this year through 2022.

What the ad fails to mention, though, is the CBO's conclusion that these costs "do not encompass all of the budgetary impacts of the ACA because that legislation has many other provisions, including some that will cause significant reductions in Medicare spending and others that will generate added tax revenues, relative to what would have occurred under prior law." More specifically, the CBO estimated that repealing the health insurance law would increase federal budget deficits by $109 billion through 2022. The CBO stated: "Repealing the coverage provisions discussed in this report would save $1,171 billion over that period, but repealing the rest of the act would increase direct spending and reduce revenues by a total of $1,280 billion."

United Airlines First Class 737 Review - Frequent Flyer Guy

The United and Continental merger is complete and the fleets have been nicely scattered around, so you have a good chance of flying on a former Continental 737 (United was an Airbus fan, the merged airline is going 737 for new planes).? These planes will also be staffed by Continental crews, some of the friendliest and most professional in the US.? Here is an overview of what to expect (bold text is from united.com followed by some color commentary).

Extra-wide leather seats with expanded legroom ? The seat is the one thing you can count on.? It?s not as comfortable as the United seats, but still nice and easy to relax in.?

Complimentary blankets available onboard for use during your flight ? You have to ask and they might not be available.? Pretty scratchy too, the old united ones were better.? No pillows any more, I bring my own for overnight flights.

    Meals and beverages

Pre-departure beverage service ? Time permitting and if the flight attendants want to.? Most times they do and take a drink order. Complimentary beer, wine, spirits, soft drinks and freshly brewed coffee ? The new United coffee sucks, like it is undrinkable unless you drop a bottle of Bailey?s in it.? Luckily, they have Bailey?s and are more than happy to mix it in your coffee.? Good selection, same items as in coach, of free drinks.? The mixer/specialty drinks, like the Mojito, are not free though. Hot towel service ? Nice way to freshen up once in the air. Meal service on flights longer than two hours ? The 737 breakfast is great, usually a tasty omelet or egg mcmuffin.? They also have warm cinnamon buns too.? Lunch and dinner is usually a wrap or salad choice.? Both come with tasty soup and a fresh baked cookie.? The food quality is improving, but consistency is not.? Here is a less than flattering meal review and here is a flattering review.

    Entertainment

Audio entertainment with complimentary headsets provided on aircraft equipped with in-flight entertainment ? Not every 737 has inflight entertainment.? A few new airplanes were ordered without and entertainment at all.? I flew one 737 with the new Boeing Sky Interior, but no tv or audio to keep me busy.? http://www.boeing.com/Features/2010/10/bca_bsi_10_27_10.html Complimentary DIRECTV? on equipped aircraft ? Free if they have it, but it?s not a sure thing. Complimentary movies on all flights three hours or longer ? If there is no DirectTV, but a monitor in the aisle, then you get a free movie.? If there is DirectTV, then you have free access to the system anyway. A complimentary copy of Hemispheres magazine ? Good magazine to flip though, but don?t feel too special, every seat has a copy. Airport arrival and departure Premier AccessSM check-in, baggage handling, boarding and security lines (where available) ? Short lines abound for first class flyers.? Two free checked bags too.? No free United Club access for North American first class flyers though.??

Braving protests, Merkel to offer encouragement in Athens

ATHENS (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel flies into the heart of Europe's debt crisis on Tuesday, facing protests by angry Greeks to bring a message of support to a near-bankrupt nation fighting to stay in the euro.

Europe's most powerful leader can expect a hostile reception by a people worn down by years of recession and austerity which many see as forced upon them by an overweening Germany as its price for emergency loans.

Police have banned protests in most of central Athens and readied 6,000 officers, including anti-terrorist units and rooftop snipers, to provide security during the six-hour visit, Merkel's first since Greece's debt crisis erupted in 2009.

It marks a gesture of support for the ruling coalition under Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, a fellow conservative, as he struggles to impose more cuts on a society fraying at the edges after five years of crippling recession.

It also underscores Merkel's commitment to keep Greece in the euro zone - at least until Germans vote in a parliamentary election due in a year.

Teachers, doctors and other public employees will stop work on Tuesday in a gesture of protest, while trade unions and opposition political parties said they would take to the streets, risking confrontation with police.

Demonstrations in Athens have a habit of turning violent, hijacked by radicals armed with petrol bombs and concrete ripped from the streets.

Thousands of trade unionists rallied on Syntagma Square outside the Greek parliament building on the eve of the visit, waving national flags. Among banners were slogans that included: "Don't cry for us, Angela" and "Angela, you are not welcome."

"We know she doesn't care about the Greeks and what we're going through," said Maria Koumarianou, 64. "We must all protest for the future of our children and grandchildren. If the turnout is big, she'll see we're at a dead end, that we can't survive."

    GERMAN ELECTION

Greece is locked in talks with its troika of lenders - the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund - on yet more cuts to secure the next tranche of a 130-billion-euro ($170-billion) loan package, its second bailout since 2010. Without the 31.5-billion-euro tranche, Greece says it will run out of money by the end of November.

But many Greeks say they cannot take much more of cuts to wages and pensions, the tax hikes and the recession that has left a quarter of the workforce jobless.

"We have concluded agreements with each other, and we are looking at their implementation," Merkel said on Monday. "I know that Greece is not going through an easy time at the moment," she acknowledged, while stressing its need to be competitive.

Relations between Berlin and Athens hit a low early this year; Merkel's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, likened Athens to a bottomless pit, and newspapers in Greece, which was occupied by German troops during World War Two, caricatured the pair as bullying Nazis.

But the visit suggests Merkel has judged the risks of a Greek exit from the euro too high for the rest of the 17-nation euro zone, especially with a German election looming next year.

Merkel is scheduled to meet Samaras, President Karolos Papoulias, and representatives of Greek business. Samaras, who won power in June, will greet Merkel at the airport.

The timing of the visit, showing Merkel very publicly with the new premier, suggests growing trust in the Greek leadership under Samaras, after a litany of broken promises and stalled reforms under the previous administration.

"Merkel's visit effectively underlines her position that Germany will continue to support Greek membership of the euro area," said Alex White, an economics analyst at JP Morgan Chase in London.

"We expect the chancellor to remain consistent on this point, at least until after Germany's federal election next September." ($1 = 0.7657 euros)

Scientists show oil palm plantations are clearing carbon-rich tropical forests in Borneo

Expanding production of palm oil, a common ingredient in processed foods, soaps and personal care products, is driving rainforest destruction and massive carbon dioxide emissions, according to a new study led by researchers at Stanford and Yale universities.

The study, published online Oct. 7 in the journal Nature Climate Change, shows that deforestation for the development of oil palm plantations in Indonesian Borneo is becoming a globally significant source of carbon dioxide emissions.

Plantation expansion is projected to contribute more than 558 million metric tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere in 2020 ? an amount greater than all of Canada's current fossil fuel emissions.

Indonesia is the leading producer of palm and palm kernel oil, which together account for more than 30 percent of the world's vegetable oil use, and which can be used for biodiesel. Most of Indonesia's oil palm plantation expansion is occurring on the island of Borneo, also known as Kalimantan, which occupies a land area nearly the size California and Florida combined. Plantation leases, covering 32 percent of Kalimantan's lowlands outside of protected areas, represent a major land bank that is slated for development over the next decade, according to the study.

In 2010 alone, land-clearing for oil palm plantations in Kalimantan emitted more than 140 million metric tons of carbon dioxide ? an amount equivalent to annual emissions from about 28 million vehicles.

Home to the world's third-largest tropical forest area, Indonesia is also one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gasses, due to rapid loss of carbon-rich forests and peatlands. Since 1990, development of oil palm plantations has cleared about 16,000 square kilometers of Kalimantan's primary and logged forested lands ? an area about the size of Hawaii. This accounts for 60 percent of Kalimantan's total forest cover loss in that time, according to the study's authors.

"Despite contentious debate over the types and uses of lands slated for oil palm plantations, the sector has grown rapidly over the past 20 years," said project leader Lisa M. Curran, a professor of ecological anthropology at Stanford and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. By combining field measurements with analyses of high-resolution satellite images, the study evaluated lands targeted for plantations and documented their carbon emissions when converted to oil palm.

The study's researchers generated the first comprehensive maps of oil palm plantation expansion from 1990 to 2010. Using cutting-edge classification technology, developed by study co-author Gregory Asner from the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology, researchers quantified the types of land cleared for oil palm plantations, as well as carbon emissions and sequestration from oil palm agriculture.

"A major breakthrough occurred when we were able to discern not only forests and non-forested lands, but also logged forests, as well as mosaics of rice fields, rubber stands, fruit gardens and mature secondary forests used by smallholder farmers for their livelihoods," said Kimberly Carlson, a Yale doctoral student and lead author of the study. "With this information, we were able to develop robust carbon bookkeeping accounts to quantify carbon emissions from oil palm development."

The research team gathered oil palm land lease records during interviews with local and regional governmental agencies. These records identify locations that have received approval and are allocated to oil palm companies. The total allocated leases spanned about 120,000 square kilometers, an area slightly smaller than Greece. Most leases in the study occupied more than 100 square kilometers, an area slightly larger than Manhattan.

Using these leases in combination with land cover maps, the team estimated future land-clearing and carbon emissions from plantations. Eighty percent of leases remained unplanted in 2010. If all of these leases were developed, more than a third of Kalimantan's lowlands would be planted with oil palm by 2020.

Despite these large numbers, accurate information about leases is not readily available for public review and oversight, even after the leases are granted. The average Kalimantan resident is unaware of plans for local oil palm development, which can have dramatic effects on residents' livelihoods and environment, Curran said.

"These plantation leases are an unprecedented 'grand-scale experiment' replacing forests with exotic palm monocultures," said Curran. "We may see tipping points in forest conversion where critical biophysical functions are disrupted, leaving the region increasingly vulnerable to droughts, fires and floods."

Combined with results generated from their more detailed district-level study recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers emphasize that sustainably producing palm oil ? a stated goal of the Indonesian palm oil industry ? will require re-evaluation of awarded oil palm plantation leases located on forested lands.

Detroit Tigers, Justin Verlander Overpower Oakland A's In 3-1 Game ALDS Win (VIDEO/PHOTOS)

DETROIT ? Justin Verlander threw a fastball that caught a bit too much of the plate, allowing Oakland's Coco Crisp to lead off the game with a stunning home run.

For the first few innings, Verlander labored, his pitch count rising while his control deserted him. But the Athletics could manage only that one run, missing their best chance of the night to break through against Detroit's hard-throwing ace.

Verlander held Oakland scoreless after his early slip, and Alex Avila homered in the fifth inning to lift the Tigers over the Athletics 3-1 Saturday night in the opener of their best-of-five AL playoff. Verlander allowed three hits in seven innings and matched his postseason high with 11 strikeouts.

"Early on was kind of a bit of a battle for me," Verlander said. "Just kind of found my rhythm a little bit and was able to hit my spots better, and I started throwing my breaking ball for strikes a little bit better too."

As usual, he seemed stronger in the later innings, striking out the side in the sixth and the first two hitters of the seventh.

"Early on, didn't have great control of any of my pitches," Verlander said. "But I was able to get myself out of jams that I created."

Joaquin Benoit pitched the eighth and Jose Valverde struck out two in a perfect ninth for the save. Oakland's Jarrod Parker allowed two earned runs in 6 1-3 innings and took the loss.

Game 2 is Sunday, with Doug Fister taking the mound for Detroit and left-hander Tommy Milone for Oakland. Then the series shifts to the West Coast.

"It's always important to get Game 1. The way it is now, obviously, it's nice starting here but to play the last three games in Oakland is definitely tough," Avila said. "Every game's important, but it felt real good to get one out of the way."

It was only the second victory for Detroit in its last seven postseason series openers. The Tigers lost Game 1 to the Yankees in the division series last year before winning in five. Detroit then lost the opener of the AL championship series to Texas.

After winning their final six games to take the AL West in shocking fashion, the A's made their presence felt right away in Detroit. The home crowd at Comerica Park greeted Verlander with a roar and a sea of twirling white towels when he popped out of the dugout and headed to the mound to start the game, but Crisp was unfazed. He pulled Verlander's two-strike pitch just inside the pole in right field to put Oakland on top.

"He made a mistake to the first batter of the game, and then he didn't make another one all night," A's first baseman Brandon Moss said, exaggerating only slightly.

Verlander had two starts cut short early by bad weather in last year's postseason. It was 49 degrees ? but dry ? at game time Saturday.

The AL Central-champion Tigers, in consecutive postseasons for the first time since 1934-35, tied it in their half of the first. Austin Jackson's hard-hit ball deflected off diving shortstop Stephen Drew and into short left field. The Detroit leadoff man ended up with a double and went to third when Quintin Berry slapped a single to third off Josh Donaldson, who also could only get a piece of the ball while diving for it.

Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera, who went 0 for 3 with a walk, grounded into a double play, but Jackson came home to make it 1-all.

Drew finally made a diving play in the second, sprawling to his right on Delmon Young's grounder and then throwing to first for the out. At the plate, the A's made Verlander work, forcing him to throw 61 pitches in the first three innings. Verlander struck out Moss to end the Oakland third with a 99 mph fastball ? but Verlander was having to reach back for extra velocity early.

"Most good starters, you try to get to them before they get into their rhythm," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "He got better as the game went along. A lot of times your best opportunity is early in the game."

The Athletics tied a postseason record by starting four rookies ? Parker, Donaldson, Yoenis Cespedes and Derek Norris.

Parker looked sharp early but allowed another run in the third because of a fielding mishap. With two out and a man on second, Berry chopped a soft grounder to the right side. Parker came off the mound to field it, but with the speedy Berry hustling to first, Parker lost control of the ball while scooping at it with his glove for an error that allowed Omar Infante to score.

"He wasn't trying to flip it, because he was closer to the bag than I was," first baseman Brandon Moss said. "He was just trying to grab it and it came out of his glove."

Avila's solo shot made it 3-1, and the A's couldn't take advantage of Verlander's rising pitch count.

"In the postseason you don't go out there and think about pitch count and keeping it low," Verlander said. "I'm just going to be aggressive, try to find the strike zone and throw quality strikes, and the pitch count will take care of itself."

Verlander led the majors in strikeouts for the second straight year, and Oakland was baseball's most strikeout-prone team. It showed toward the end of Verlander's outing.

After taking a called third strike for the third out of the sixth ? Verlander's fourth strikeout in a five-hitter span ? Donaldson chirped a bit at plate umpire Jim Reynolds. Verlander was done after one more inning, finishing with 121 pitches and his fourth career postseason win.

    Verlander walked four.

"We battled him hard, but it doesn't even seem to matter how many pitches that guy throws," Oakland outfielder Josh Reddick said. "He just keeps coming after you with all of those pitches."

Benoit allowed a single in the eighth, followed by a flyout by Moss that Andy Dirks caught at the wall in right field.

"I didn't think it was gone," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I thought he just missed it. And he did just miss it."

Oakland right-hander Pat Neshek, whose newborn son died 23 hours after his birth, came on to relieve Parker in the seventh. He entered with two on and one out but got out of the inning without any scoring.

Oakland wore patches with the initials GJN. Neshek's son's name was Gehrig John Neshek.

"It was really tough warming up, and I thought about him the entire time. I said yesterday that baseball would be a way to clear my mind, but that didn't happen. He was always there," Neshek said. "I know it is a cliche, but I really felt like I had someone watching me and helping with that last pitch. That was my best slider of the year."
