L.A. GALAXY AT COLORADO

5 p.m. Sat., ESPN2; 1510 AM, 93.7 FM, 1150 AM (Spanish)

Spotlight on Jose Villarreal: Homegrown forward Jose Villarreal has made an impact for the Galaxy in the absence of Robbie Keane, who missed L.A.'s 2-1 win against Vancouver with a hip flexor injury. Villarreal scored in the victory, as did Gyasi Zardes, marking the first time in MLS history two homegrown players scored in the same game. "I'm not trying to compare myself to Robbie (Keane)," Villarreal said. "I'm just trying to do what I can to helpt the team win."

NOTEBOOK

Rapids: Nick LaBrocca has come on strong of late. He has a goal and an assist in his last two matches. His assist during Colorado's 1-1 draw with Seattle was his first since April 6. He said on the team's website: "I am just trying to be aggressive. I just keep looking for opportunities and taking them when I see them. ... The Rapids unbeaten streak has reached five games, coming off their first-ever point in Seattle. Colorado is 3-0-2 in that stretch. ... Drew Moor's goal against the Sounders was his second of the season, his first also coming in a draw against Houston.

Galaxy: Landon Donovan and Omar Gonzalez, both playing for the United States in the Gold Cup, are listed as international absences. ... Former Colorado midfielder Pablo Mastroeni, who was traded to the Galaxy in late June, said he is excited to reunite with family, including his wife and two young children. "I think it's going to be an emotional game for me," Mastroeni told the MLS website. "Obviously it's great to see the wife and kids and to play in a stadium that I played in for a lot of years and then to be in front of fans and play against a lot of good friends of mine."

APNewsBreak: Gay tested positive at US nationals

Sprinter Tyson Gay failed more than one drug test this year, recording one of his positives at the U.S. championships in June, where he won the 100 and 200 meters, The Associated Press learned Friday.

Earlier this month, Gay revealed he tested positive in an out-of-competition test he took May 16.

Three people familiar with the case told the AP that Gay had multiple positives this year. One of those people said one positive came at nationals and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has notified him of that result.

The people did not want their names used because the doping case against Gay is ongoing and the details have not been made public.

Gay's representatives did not immediately respond to attempts by the AP to reach them.

The sprinter has already surrendered his spot at next month's world championships. If a positive test from nationals is confirmed by his "B'' sample, those results would be vacated, though it's likely they would be anyway because of his May 16 positive. The May 16 test has been confirmed by a test of the "B'' sample, one of the people familiar with the case said.

A first-time offense for doping usually brings with it a two-year ban, though athletes who cooperate with USADA sometimes get reduced penalties.

One person familiar with the case told the AP that multiple positives over a short period of time are a sign of an athlete who wasn't trying to hide anything, but simply didn't know he was taking a banned drug.

Gay is cooperating with USADA.

"The additional positive sample is consistent with him taking responsibility," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said. "He should be commended for that and for removing himself from world championships, which we all should appreciate. The sample was expected, as he works with us for the fair resolution based on the rules, given the fact of his case."

When Gay admitted to the earlier positive in a phone interview nearly two weeks ago, he fought back tears.

"I don't have a sabotage story. I don't have any lies. I don't have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake or it was on USADA's hands, someone playing games," he said. "I don't have any of those stories. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down."

Since news of his positive, media reports have linked Gay to Clayton Gibson, an anti-aging doctor based in Atlanta. In an email sent to AP, Gibson would not confirm Gay was among his patients.

Gay has been the most-watched U.S. male sprinter for the past several years and has long sold himself as a clean athlete.

The 30-year-old, who won the world championship in the 100, 200 and 400 relay in 2007, took part in USADA's "My Victory" program ? in which athletes volunteer for enhanced testing to prove they're clean ? and his results never raised red flags.

Until, that is, the out-of-competition test in May. Results came back positive for a banned substance, the identity of which he has not been revealed.

The latest news adds to a slew of negative headlines for track. Jamaican Olympic champion, Veronica Campbell-Brown, tested positive for a banned diuretic at a meet on the island in May.

A month later, Asafa Powell, the former 100 world record holder, tested positive for a stimulant at Jamaica's national championships, as did his teammate, Sherone Simpson, a three-time Olympic medalist.

In a recent statement, Powell said he had "retained legal counsel" and couldn't "discuss all the details of the case."

"I look forward to demonstrating to everyone that I am a clean athlete. I always have been, and I always will be," Powell said. "I look forward to donning my country's national (colors) and as I step into the blocks at the starting line I will remain, as always, proud to be Jamaican."

Gay, finally feeling healthy after years of nagging injuries, was among those expected to push Usain Bolt at worlds next month, but instead of racing in Moscow, he'll be resolving his doping case.

Asked on Thursday about the series of doping cases, Bolt said, "definitely, it's going to set us back a little bit."

He insisted he was clean.

"So I'm just going to continue running, using my talent and just trying to improve the sport," he said.

Juror feels she let down Trayvon Martin's parents

MIAMI (AP) ? A juror says she feels like she let Trayvon Martin's parents down by agreeing to acquit George Zimmerman in the teen's fatal shooting.

In a taped interview aired Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America," juror B29 said jurors couldn't find enough evidence under Florida law to convict the neighborhood watch volunteer in the February 2012 death.

The juror agreed to let ABC show her face and use her first name, Maddy. She says she "fought to the end" but stands by the verdict returned earlier this month by the six-member, all-woman jury.

The 36-year-old Puerto Rican mother says the decision was difficult.

But the juror said she wants Martin's mother to know that her son will always be in her heart.

Pope speaks to youth alienated by church?s sins

Agence France-Presse

Pope Francis blows a kiss from his popemobile as he arrives for the Stations of the Cross service on the Copacabana beachfront in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Friday, July 26, 2013. Also known as the Via Crucis and Via Dolorosa, the Stations of the Cross are built around reflections on Jesus? last steps leading up to his crucifixion and death. Francis started off the day, his fifth in Rio, by hearing confessions from a half-dozen young pilgrims in a park and met privately with juvenile detainees. (AP Photo/Silvia Izquierdo)

RIO DE JANEIRO ? Pope Francis took his mission to re-energize his flock to legions of young Catholics on a Brazilian beach Friday, reaching out to those who have lost faith due to church failings.

The Argentine pontiff was greeted by 1.5 million faithful on Copacabana beach for a second straight night of religious ceremonies marking World Youth Day, a week-long gathering of young Catholics, according to organizers.

Latin America?s first pope sat in front of a giant cross on a grandiose white stage during a somber re-enactment of the Way of the Cross, with an orchestra playing Beethoven and an actor emulating a bloodied Jesus facing crucifixion.

He used his pulpit to make a political message in a country that was rocked last month by massive protests against corruption, lagging public services and the cost of hosting next year?s World Cup.

?On the cross, Jesus is united with so many young people who have lost faith in political institutions, because they see in them only selfishness and corruption,? the pope said.

?He unites himself with those young people who have lost faith in the Church, or even in God because of the incoherence of Christians and ministers of the Gospel,? the 76-year-old said.

The pope, who was elected in March to reform the Church, was making a veiled reference to the pedophilia and financial scandals that have rocked the Vatican in recent years.

Vatican officials have made no secret of the fact that the pope?s first trip abroad since his election aims to re-energize followers. Brazil remains the world?s biggest Catholic country, but the flock has shrunk while Evangelicals gain ground.

?The cross of Christ bears the suffering and the sin of mankind, including our own. Jesus accepts all this with open arms, bearing on his shoulders our crosses and saying to us: ?Have courage,?? Pope Francis said.

As the ceremony wrapped up, some 200 protesters angry at Rio state Governor Sergio Cabral marched to within meters (yards) of the stage. At the same time in Sao Paulo, police used tear gas to disperse 300 protesters who ransacked several banks.

Earlier, adoring crowds cheered wildly as an open-top popemobile took Francis along the crescent-shaped beach better known for skimpy bikinis and caipirinha cocktails than Bibles and religious ceremonies.

?Pope Francis has a direct way of saying things and young people connect with that,? said Soledad Bohle, a 21-year-old student from Argentina.

Before the beach ceremony, the pope met convicts, heard five young believers confess their sins and had lunch with a dozen others.

?I told him that he should visit my country because we need him. He told me that Venezuelans have no sins,? said Estefani Lescano, a 21-year-old Venezuelan student who confessed to the pope in a Rio park.

After his meeting with convicts, the Argentine pontiff emerged on the balcony of a church-owned palace to address the crowd, urging them to cherish the elderly on Grandparents Day.

?How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society,? he said.

Rio authorities, meanwhile, have been scrambling to ensure his visit goes smoother after several logistical headaches this week.

Rain has poured on the tropical city since the second day of the pope?s visit, soaking a field outside the city that was supposed to host hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and the pope for a weekend vigil and mass.

A giant stage had been built in Guaratiba, but the area turned into a mud field, forcing authorities to move the events to Copacabana.

Workers had toiled at the Guaratiba site, dubbed ?field of faith,? since January.

It was the latest embarrassment for local officials who are preparing for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.

When the pope arrived on Monday, his small Fiat was forced to a standstill as adoring pilgrims swarmed the car.

Visitors, meanwhile, have had to endure public transport headaches, with the metro breaking down for two hours on Tuesday.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes took responsibility for the city?s logistical problems.

?If you ask me to grade the organization of World Youth Day, I would say we are closer to zero than to 10,? Paes told CBN radio while quickly giving the pope and residents ?a 10.?

?Blame it on me, but don?t destroy the image of our city,? he said.

Military Chaplin quotes President Eisenhower ? Anti-theists demand his punishment for ?hate? and ?bigoted, religious supremacy? [Darleen Click]

#WarOnChristians in the US Military

A chaplain at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska was ordered to remove a religious column he had written titled, ?No Atheists in Foxholes: Chaplains Gave all in World War II,? because it allegedly offended atheists serving on the Air Force base.

Col. Brian Duffy, the base commander told Fox News the column was removed ?out of respect for those who considered its title offensive.? [...]

Lt. Col. Kenneth Reyes confirmed to Fox News that he wrote the original essay that appeared in his ?Chaplain?s Corner? column on the base website.

Reyes recounted the origin of the phrase ?There is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole.? Father William Cummings has largely been credited with uttering the phrase in Bataan during World War II.

President Eisenhower referenced the phrase during a speech to the American Legion in 1954, noting ?I am delighted that our veterans are sponsoring a movement to increase our awareness of God in our daily lives. In battle, they learned a great truth that there are no atheists in the foxholes.?

Reyes ended his essay with a reflection on faith.

?Everyone expresses some form of faith every day, whether it is religious or secular,? he wrote. ?Some express faith by believing when they get up in the morning they will arrive at work in one piece, thankful they have been given another opportunity to enjoy the majesty of the day, or express relief the doctor?s results were negative.?

Reyes did not attack or insult atheists or non-believers in his column.

However, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation accused Reyes of going on an ?anti-secular diatribe? and publicly denigrating ?those without religion.?

The Air Force agreed and approximately five hours after the MRFF complained, they removed the chaplain?s essay.

?While certainly not intended to offend, the article has been removed from our website,? Col. Duffy wrote in an email to the MRFF. ?We remain mindful of the governing instructions on this matter and will work to avoid recurrence.?

But that?s not good enough for the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. They want the chaplain punished for what he wrote.

?Faith based hate, is hate all the same,? Page wrote. ?Lt. Col. Reyes must be appropriately reprimanded.?

Ironically, the Air Force left six complaints about the essay on their website.

The Left has marched through civil service, media, entertainment and academia, to the utter detriment of American tradition and culture.

Now they want to push through the military, to the detriment of the mission of the US military.

And we are letting them.

Microsoft Is The Cancer Killing Nokia

On February 10, 2011, Nokia (NOK) and Microsoft (MSFT) released a statement announcing plans for a partnership to develop a global ecosystem. The agreement specified that Nokia would join ranks with the Windows operating system as an original equipment maker. In broad terms, Microsoft would put up the marketing cash and software, in exchange for near exclusive access to Nokia hardware as an ecosystem provider. Before the ink dried on this partnership, however, Microsoft had already closed deals with Huawei Technologies and Samsung (SSNHY.OB) to also manufacture Windows phones. Yes, Microsoft is notorious for throwing its own partners beneath the bus and forcing original equipment makers to compete against each other until they implode financially. Nokia is following in the loss leading footsteps of both Dell (DELL) and Hewlett Packard (HPQ). Microsoft is the cancer.

The PC is a Cheap Commodity

Apple's (AAPL) timeless "Get a Mac" advertising campaign still defines the consumer electronics market. In these series of commercials, airing between 2006 and 2009, Apple personifies itself through the MacIntosh computer as a chic, yet eager to please hipster. Alternatively, the Microsoft Windows PC machine is a bespectacled office park relic wearing a tweed suit. In terms of smartphone sales, Apple Corporation still remains in growth mode. Meanwhile, Microsoft is effectively a cash flow rich utility that monopolizes its niche market and kicks out dividends to shareholders. Microsoft's utilitarian approach to doing business, however, destroys long-term shareholder value for original equipment makers, such as Nokia, that are attached to the Windows ecosystem.

On July 23, 2013, Apple filed its third quarterly report for fiscal 2013 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Apple Q3 2013 period ended on June 29, 2013. For Q3 2013, Apple sold 31 million iPhone units, which marks a 20% improvement above the year-over-year quarter. The iPhone has emerged as the centerpiece of an Apple iOS ecosystem that still leverages the halo effect of historical iPod, iTunes, and iMac launches and upgrades. The prior week, on July 18, 2013, Microsoft released its fourth quarter and full-year results for fiscal 2013 ended June 30, 2013. For Q4 2013, Microsoft posted $4.97 billion of earnings - from $19.9 billion in revenue. These results do include $900 million in Surface tablet inventory write-downs alongside a $2 billion year-over-year decline in Windows Division sales. Wall Street obviously was not impressed, as traders dumped Microsoft stock to $31.40 for a 13% loss in the immediate hours following this earnings release.

The Smartphone Market

Recent earnings reports out of both Nokia and Microsoft alongside the staggering long-term collapse of Hewlett Packard and Dell business models support the thesis that Windows is a cancer. Windows software licensing generates consistent heaps of cash for Microsoft, at the expense of real growth and the survival of associated original equipment makers. Microsoft Windows has already lost the war to Google (GOOG) Android and Apple iOS. To avoid bankruptcy, Nokia must at least entertain ideas of either joining ranks with Android, or building out its own integrated ecosystem independent of Microsoft. At minimum, tacit gamesmanship might compel the button-down culture at Microsoft to take calculated risks and attempt to develop revolutionary product, such as Google Glass and Apple iWatch. Microsoft is no alpha. Microsoft is a beta follower. Beta behavior out of Redmond is systematically destroying the entire Windows tribe.

On June 28, 2013, research firm comScore released its report presenting May 2013 smartphone subscriber market share. The report averages data for the three-month period spanning between February 2013 and May 2013. A quick glance of this comScore report will verify the presence of a dominant Google Android and Apple iOS duopoly. In total, this Android-iOS duopoly powers roughly 92% of the U.S. smartphone subscriber market. On the handset side of the ledger, Apple and Samsung are a respective one and two as original equipment makers according to market share. The Google Android - Apple iOS is actually gaining in strength - with 1-2% expansions in market share in both operating systems and handsets above the prior quarter.

At the bottom of the heap, BlackBerry (BBRY), Microsoft Windows, and the now defunct Nokia Symbian operating systems are fighting desperately simply to stay relevant. In this game of musical chairs, Google and Android already occupy two out of the three remaining chairs in the room. Recent efforts to build out a viable third wheel alternative beyond the Google Android - Apple iOS duopoly have failed. Numerous reviews touting the Nokia Lumia 1020 phone are also fundamentally flawed. Nokia's latest premium Windows phone is notable for the picture clarity of its 41-megapixel camera. Still, the phone will remain an effective outpost along this Windows Highway to nowhere. Both Nokia and Microsoft shareholders should consider selling stock immediately.

The Bottom Line

On June 19, 2013, The Wall Street Journal reported that "people familiar with the matter" claimed that Microsoft held "advanced talks" to acquire Nokia. Talks allegedly broke down, after Microsoft refused to pay a significant premium above Nokia's current $15 billion market capitalization. Cynics, of course, may speculate that every recent event is merely part of a calculated plan to deliver Nokia to Microsoft. Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO, is a former Microsoft man. In any event, the Microsoft - Nokia alliance is failing shareholders. Anticipation of a Microsoft led merger and acquisition deal has precluded Nokia from fully exploring its growth options, especially in regards to taking on Android.

On July 18, 2013, Nokia released a financial report for its second quarter and semi-annual period ended June 30, 2013. For Q2 2013, Nokia reported losses of $370 million. Nokia continues to lose money, despite the fact that Microsoft transfers the company $250 million in up-front "platform support payments" each quarter. Nokia now owes a debt of $650 million to Microsoft. At this junction in time, Microsoft could do nothing and return to the bargaining table as a top creditor to snap up whatever remains of a bankrupt Nokia. The Nokia balance sheet will continue to shrink, as goodwill, property, plant, and equipment, and other intangible assets depreciate towards zero. In theory, assets that are not being leveraged for profits must depreciate.

Nokia closed out its Q2 2013 books with $35 billion in assets above $24 billion in liabilities on the balance sheet. Nokia now operates with $11 billion, or $2.96 per share, worth of intangible assets. On the asset side of the ledger, Nokia carries $6.4 billion in goodwill, $1.8 billion in property, plant, and equipment, and $500 million in other intangible assets on the books. In reality, Nokia may be worth less than $1 per share, after writing off goodwill and intangible assets from the balance sheet.

Nokia is now a strong sell. Microsoft is the ball and chain weighing down Nokia.

TCL's fall lineup of HDTVs includes a 50-inch 4K model for $999

TCL

If you're yearning for a super high res HDTV and the usual suspects' products are just a bit too pricey, there's a new challenger about to join: China's TCL. Its fall lineup of televisions leads with a 50-inch 4K model (shown above) due in September priced at just $999. It joins Seiki as a Chinese manufacturer bringing budget priced Ultra HD panels to the US with this 120Hz edge lit LED model that packs 4 HDMI inputs with MHL support. If the 7E504D's 3,840 x 2,160 resolution screen isn't a must-have for you, it does have some more traditional HDTVs on the way in the form of its 5510 series.

They include 40-, 46- and 55-inch 1080p models, priced at $399, $499 and $799, respectively. The largest one includes built-in WiFi with Smart TV features including Netflix, YouTube and Yahoo Apps, and all go on sale in August. So far, reviews of the Seiki UHDTVs have suggested resolution isn't everything even at these prices (and especially at this screen size) -- we'll be waiting to see if TCL's scaling, contrast, motion processing and other qualities can match up with the big guys.

Scottish News: Church to unveil O'Brien successor

The Roman Catholic Church is to unveil a successor to Cardinal Keith O'Brien following the cleric's fall from grace earlier this year after admitting inappropriate sexual conduct.

Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, leader of Catholics in Scotland, will introduce the new archbishop-elect of St Andrews and Edinburgh after the resignation of Cardinal O'Brien, the most senior Catholic cleric in Britain.

Cardinal O'Brien, 75, left Scotland earlier this year for a period of "spiritual renewal, prayer and penance" after admitting that his sexual conduct ''had fallen beneath the standards'' expected of him during his almost 50-year career.

He indicated that he would not contest claims by three priests and a former priest of "inappropriate behaviour" dating back to the 1980s, and intended to retire permanently from the public life of the church.

Front-runners to take over his post include Monsignor Leo Cushley, a Scot and a diplomat who has spent time in Cairo, Burundi and the United Nations and works in the Vatican's Secretariat of State.

Monsignor Patrick Burke, also Scottish and an official at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) - the Vatican department responsible for enforcing Catholic orthodoxy - has also been named as a possible successor.

The Bishop of Aberdeen, and former Abbot of Pluscarden Abbey, the Most Rev Hugh Gilbert, is believed to have an outside chance of being appointed to the post.

Cardinal O'Brien pulled out of the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI following widespread publicity over the allegations of sexual misconduct.

Stolen Flock of Seagulls van found; gear missing

(AP) ? A stolen van containing $70,000 worth of equipment belonging to the 1980s band Flock of Seagulls has been found in Southern California ? but it was empty.

City News Service reports the truck was found Tuesday night in Santa Fe Springs.

Band frontman Mike Score says the rented van was stolen from a Downey hotel on Sunday. The thief might have followed it after the band's Saturday night show in Bellflower.

The stolen gear included stage clothing, guitars, drums, a keyboard and computer hard drives containing the songs for Score's first solo album.

Hotel video recorded the theft, but no arrests have been made.

Flock of Seagulls is best known for its 1982 hit "I Ran (So Far Away)."

Both leagues will be 12 teams and PPR. I'll hold on paypal. Can accept on stars as well but I dont know how many people that will be an option for. I have held for a few contests over the last few years and everybody was paid up quickly at the end.

So yeah, post in this thread if you are interested and ill pm you my paypal details.

And remember when sending on paypal dont include anything about the league or anything that could link it back to ffb.

5 Reasons to Dump a Customer | Sales Motivation and Sales Training

exit 300x254 5 Reasons to Dump a Customer photoWe?ve all had at one time or another a customer we can?t stand.

Come on? let?s be blunt and quit kidding ourselves about trying to like everybody.? To be even more blunt, some customers just aren?t worth keeping!? Are you with me?? I have a feeling you?re saying, ?Mark, you?re spot-on.?

Here are 5 reasons I think it makes sense to dump a customer:

1.? You can?t make money off of them and there is no strategic reason to keep them.

2.? The demands they place on your company are impacting the level of service you?re able to give to other customers.

3.? Ethically, they?re challenging you or someone else in your company.

4.? The price concessions you?ve had to make to get their business is killing your profit.

5.? The customer?s reputation is a risk to your reputation.

What I?ve experienced too many times is companies not being willing to bite the bullet and dump a customer, even though the customer is clearly doing one or more of the five things listed above.?

Management is naturally hetsitant to dump a customer due to the perception they?re going to lose business.? What they fail to take into consideration is how short-sighted this perspective is.

The reason it is short-sighted is because by caving to the the desire to not lose sales, they give up far more profitable business from other customers with whom they could be spending time.

Another reason I believe is even more important is the issue of employee satisfaction and productivity.

If employees and salespeople are getting sucked into having to spend too much time with problem customers, it?s only natural it?s going to take a toll on them.? Result is lower productivity and potentially increased turnover.

Go ahead, dump a customer.? First time you do it will feel weird, but after you do it, you?ll be amazed at how much better things are.

Want to know how to dump a customer? ?Here on some suggestions on what to do when It?s Time to Fire Your Cheap Customers.

China-Taiwan Route to Get Budget Carrier

Article Excerpt

SHANGHAI?China's Spring Airlines Co. is set to become the first budget carrier to operate flights between China and Taiwan, an increasingly congested but highly lucrative market thanks to booming tourism demand from mainland Chinese.

Spring Air, the nation's biggest low-cost carrier, will begin flights between Shanghai and the southern Taiwanese port city of Kaohsiung in August, with Shanghai-Taipei service starting before the end of this year, Chairman Wang Zhenghua told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

"Taiwan is a key tourist market for Chinese travelers these days, so I believe the new routes will be become profitable for us soon," ...

Kathryn McEwen added a discussion to the group Americans support Israel

New Israeli Ambassador a 'Conservative Ideologue'

U.S.-born Ron Dermer will assume the post of Israel's ambassador to the United States this fall ? and he faces significant challenges.

Among them is establishing healthy relations with the Obama administration and maintaining support for Israel in Congress, according to Alan Elsner, vice president for communications for J Street.

"Dermer must overcome his reputation as a conservative ideologue if he wants to forge good working relations with a Democratic administration," Elsner writes in an op-ed piece for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

"The same is true in Congress where the new ambassador will be welcomed with open arms by Republicans but may face initial suspicion from some on the Democratic side of the aisle.

"Israel needs all the supporters it can get from both parties ? so leaning one way or the other, or even appearing to lean, is not only inappropriate but a recipe for disaster."

J Street describes itself as a pro-Israel advocacy group whose stated aim is to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.

Dermer must also nurture the crucial relationship between Israel and the Jewish community in America, Elsner posits.

He writes: "Any Israeli ambassador must accept the American Jewish community as it is: predominantly progressive on economic and social issues and dovish on foreign policy."

Dermer was born and raised in Miami Beach, Fla., where his father served as mayor in the late 1960s. He moved to Israel in 1996, and in 2005 became economic envoy at the Israeli embassy in Washington, which required him to give up his U.S. citizenship.

He went on to become a close adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and on July 9 it was announced that he would become the new Israeli ambassador, replacing Michael Oren.

Elsner adds: "American Jews do care about Israel, but an overwhelming majority believes that reaching peace with the Palestinians based on a two-state solution is vital if Israel is to remain democratic and a homeland for the Jewish people.

"We look forward to a fruitful and constructive relationship with Ambassador Dermer."

Modern Meets Traditional: The Lovely Hawthorn House in ...

After several incomplete renovations, the Hawthorn project became a serious matter.??The task was two fold, firstly to consolidate and reinstate the existing heritage parts and?secondly?to create a new architectural ?language that would transform the rear and become the soul of the new indoor and outdoor living areas.? To get a better understanding of this project and how it evolved, you need to know when did it all begin. Back in the 1900s, a Victorian?brick edifice was transformed into a real?home, separated into four units, grouped around a central light well. Since then, other small ?improvements? were made, leaving the house in a highly dysfunctional state. When?AM Architecture?took control over the project, the team of architects already knew what were the ?damages? and came rapidly with a plan. The outdoor area became one of the focus points. There are a swimming pool and a lounge area, where one can enjoy the sun?s warmth.?A truss?across?the rear balcony became a decorative structural element, embellishing the courtyard. A certain traditional-like design line was kept both, outside and inside. The main material used in defining the interior was, as expected, wood. The ceilings, the floors and most of the furniture are made of wood. These enhance the feeling of warmth and coziness. Modern splashes of design are also present: the open plan living room (and the space division), the couches, the lighting decorations, the upgraded kitchen and bathrooms.

(AP) ? The Yankees say Alex Rodriguez is expected to have an MRI on his injured left quadriceps at a New York hospital on Sunday.

Rodriguez played designated hitter on Saturday in a minor league game after feeling tightness in the thigh muscle. He has been rehabbing from surgery in January on his left hip.

On Saturday, Rodriguez told reporters after the game that his quad was sore and that he wasn't sure if he would play Sunday. The third baseman reached his 20-day rehab limit on Sunday. He was hoping to rejoin the Yankees on Monday in Texas, but wasn't sure if he would play third or DH on his return.

The Yankees were scheduled to play the Red Sox in Boston on Sunday night.

Police sergeant: Woman fell from Six Flags coaster

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? An Arlington police sergeant says a woman who died while riding a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas fell from the ride.

Sgt. Christopher Cook told The Associated Press on Saturday that police believe the woman fell Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, and that there appears to have been no foul play.

He says police, fire and emergency medical services responded to the park around 6:45 p.m. Friday in reference to a woman who had fallen from a train car while riding a roller coaster. He says she was pronounced dead at the scene.

She had been riding the Texas Giant. Dubbed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world, it reaches 14 stories high, drops 79 degrees and banks 95 degrees.

A Secret Folk Music Holds Firm In China?s Badlands ( And They Rock? )

img 2787 wide 6420cbde97f9252f22b585dfaa4df70127dabdc0 s4 A Secret Folk Music Holds Firm In Chinas Badlands ( And They Rock... )by?ANTHONY KUHN,NPR -

When?Guns N? Roses?released the album?Chinese Democracy?five years ago, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman commented that, questions of politics aside, the GNR sound just wasn?t most Chinese folks? cup of tea.

?According to my knowledge,? he said, ?a lot of people don?t like this kind of music because it?s too noisy and too loud.?

That may be so. The country?s airwaves are full of syrupy pop tunes and prissy patriotic odes. But generalizing about musical tastes is risky business, especially in a country of 1.3 billion pairs of ears.

To find a homegrown musical alternative to conventional musical tastes, just travel to the edge of northwest China?s Shaanxi province, on the middle reaches of the Yellow River, on the southern edge of a vast plateau of dusty badlands.

By the standards of wealthier southern China, the area is poor, dry and coarse.

On a recent afternoon, local musician Zhang Junmin joins his fellow band members on a hill behind his village. They?re there to perform a style of music called Lao Qiang, which is roughly translatable as ?Old Tune.? Zhang says it?s been passed down in his family for centuries.

If you didn?t know better, you might think you were hearing the hard-knock life story of a Mississippi Delta bluesman.

Zhang says his father was close to illiterate. Zhang himself was too poor to attend school. He farmed the land part of the time, and played music the rest. He says he learned his art the traditional way.

?If I couldn?t pick up a tune on my instrument, my papa would get mad,? Zhang recalls in a raspy voice. ?He?d come over and slap me upside the head. That slap would wake me up, and then I?d get it. If he didn?t slap me, I wouldn?t concentrate. And I wouldn?t get it.?

Traditionally, Lao Qiang musicians would accompany a puppeteer, who would tell stories from behind a screen. It wasn?t until a couple of decades ago that the musicians came out from behind that screen and performed on their own, in full view of the audience.

The origin of Lao Qiang music is a matter of some dispute, but Zhang says the most plausible explanation he?s heard is that it is descended from the chanteys of boatmen on the Yellow River (lots of ?hey?s? and ?ho?s?) as they rowed barges laden with grain to the imperial capital at Chang?an during the Western Han dynasty, roughly 2,000 years ago. Beacon focus of Boeing fire probe, Boston plane upsets investors

By Rhys Jones and Alwyn Scott and Andrea Shalal-Esa

LONDON/SEATTLE/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - British aviation investigators identified an emergency beacon made by Honeywell International Inc as a likely source of last week's blaze on a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner and called for it to be turned off, spurring a rally in Boeing shares by relieved investors.

Later on Thursday a Japan Airlines 787 returned to Boston's Logan airport after receiving an in-flight maintenance alert about a fuel pump.

A spokesman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said the incident was not an emergency but nervous investors marked Boeing shares down 1.5 percent in afterhours trade.

Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said the locator beacon and its battery was the only system on a parked Ethiopian Airlines plane at Heathrow that was near the fire and had the power to start it.

Boeing said the beacon could be removed in about an hour from its newest model plane, which was grounded for more than three months earlier this year because of overheating of lithium-ion backup batteries in two January incidents.

Shares of Boeing closed 2.7 percent higher at $107.63, near the high of $108.15 reached a week ago before the fire. The Boston incident then saw the shares slip to $106.

The AAIB said it remained unclear whether the fire was triggered by a malfunction in the beacon's lithium-manganese battery or some external force - such as an electrical short circuit - and said the probe would continue.

In its report, the AAIB also called on the FAA and other regulators to review use of such emergency beacons that use lithium-based batteries on all other aircraft.

UK officials said last week's fire was unrelated to the January incidents that grounded the 787. Investigators never determined what prompted the batteries involved in those cases to melt down, but Boeing resolved the issue by fireproofing the box they come in, and finding a way to vent any possible fire outside the plane.

And there was no indication the return to Boston of the Japan Airlines plane was in anyway connected to previous incidents involving the Dreamliner but it underscored the caution now surrounding the high-tech aircraft.

"The pilot decided to turn back out of an abundance of caution," Richard Walsh, spokesman for Boston's Logan International Airport told Reuters.

Carol Anderson, a spokeswoman for Japan Airlines, said Flight JL007, bound for Tokyo with 184 passengers on board, got a maintenance message related to the fuel pump about three hours after leaving Boston.

The plane returned to Boston as a standard precautionary measure, landing safely at the airport at 6:16 p.m. (2216 GMT), and there was no sign of smoke, Anderson said.

It was a fire in a parked Japan Airlines 787 at Boston in January that helped lead to the earlier groundings of the Dreamliner, a plane that combines light-weight composite parts and new electrical systems to achieve its fuel efficiency.

HIGHER HUMIDITY

While the UK report focused on the beacon made by U.S. conglomerate Honeywell, aviation experts said there could also be issues with the 787's higher humidity or other environmental factors. Water can conduct electricity, so high moisture levels could increase the likelihood of short circuits.

"The investigators are looking at everything, humidity, condensation and ... how things are installed. It's a comprehensive effort," said one industry source.

Boeing's new plane has a relatively high humidity, which helps keeps passengers more comfortable, and investigators are now looking at whether there is enough insulation to prevent moisture from condensing and short circuiting systems such as the beacon, said the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

A source close to Boeing, speaking on condition that he not be named, said the 787 may need better isolation of electrical components from the plane's high humidity, something industry people refer to as "rain in the plane."

Analysts said they were watching for further developments.

"There's nothing about this finding that indicates a lack of safety with the plane, but on the other hand there's no conclusive proof that a system unrelated to the plane is to blame," said Richard Aboulafia, an analyst with the Teal Group.

Analyst Yan Derocles of Paris-based Oddo Securities agreed. "We have to wait for the conclusions and at that point it could be a problem for Boeing, because the succession of incidents could chip away at confidence in the 787," he said.

Boeing said the locator beacon is not required by U.S. Federal Aviation Administration regulations, although some other nations do mandate their use.

"If the AAIB recommendation is adopted by regulators, 787 operators would operate their airplanes without a functioning ELT. ELTs are not required as part of the airplane design. There was no requirement to operate the ELTs during 787 flight test," said Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel.

The beacons, also called emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) are positioned in the upper rear of the 787, and can lead rescuers to a downed aircraft. They are powered by non-rechargeable, lithium-manganese batteries used for decades in products like digital cameras, walkie-talkies and pacemakers.

HONEYWELL

Honeywell said it would help Boeing and the airlines as needed, but cautioned that it was premature to jump to conclusions about the fire. It said it did not expect any financial impact from the AAIB's recommended action.

Honeywell shares rose 0.6 percent on Thursday to close at $82.97.

The AAIB report said the fire broke out in the upper portion of the 787's rear fuselage where the ELT devices are located. "There are no other aircraft systems in this vicinity which, with the aircraft unpowered, contain stored energy capable of initiating a fire in the area of head damage," it said.

It said large transport aircraft do not have fire detection or suppression in the space above the cabin ceiling, "had this event occurred in flight it could pose a significant safety concern."

Boeing said it supported the AAIB's recommendations and reiterated its confidence in the Dreamliner's safety.

In Washington, the FAA said it was reviewing the report.

The battery linked to the London fire is made by Newark, New York-based Ultralife Corp , according to an industry source. Ultralife did not return calls or emails seeking comment. Its shares fell 1.8 percent to $3.76.

The AAIB said Honeywell had produced some 6,000 ELTs of the same design, which are fitted to a wide range of aircraft, and this had been the only significant "thermal incident."

The battery cells in the beacon showed signs of "disruption" the AAIB report said. "It is not clear however, whether the combustion in the area of the ELT was initiated by a release of energy within the batteries or by an external mechanism such as an electrical short."

Alie & Georgia's Alaska Travel Guide | Devour The Blog: Cooking ...

Aaaaaah!laska. That?s what you?ll say when you get off the plane, partly because the airport has taxidermied albino beavers and snarling wolves next to the baggage carousel, and partly because it?s quite possibly the most gorgeous place in the United States. Either way, this vast pioneer expanse of northern U.S. territory will have you making sounds you haven?t made before.

We chose Homer as our destination because we?d heard it was small, quaint. Also, it?s home to mariners and farmers and rough, beardy frontiersmen. The man:woman ratio in Alaska is said to be 107:1, but like they say up there: ?The odds are good, but the goods are odd.? Watch tonight?s episode of Tripping Out with Alie and Georgia to see if that?s true.

In the Alaska episode, you?ll also see:

Dog Sledding: Twelve dogs pulling Alie, Georgia and their kickass guide over the snowy hills. Truly one of the most exhilarating things we?ve ever done, and we?ve done some dicey, scary things. Dog sledding was better than all of them.

Mermaid Cafe: We hit this place for huge rockfish sandwiches eaten al fresco. Because when it?s 43 degrees outside, Alaskans dine on the patio in short sleeves.

Two Sisters Bakery: Chocolate mousse mooses, pull-apart donuts (to help insulate us from the cold) and moose pie pockets. Yes, we ate moose.

The Salty Dawg Saloon: Homer, Alaska calls itself a ?Drinking town with a fishing problem? and we hit the local, dark, divey watering hole to drink amongst the locals and sass them back. Trust us, there was sassing.

Tiny Airplanes (see above): Ever ride in a? plane smaller than your car? Ever ponder who would weep at your funeral if you crashed into a glacier? We did.

Halibut Fishing: We take a boat trip into the Alaska bay waters and see bald eagles, otters and maybe some halibut. Did we catch any? You?ll have to watch. Did one of us get really seasick? You?ll have to watch. (Yes-cough-Georgia)

Bahrain economic growth accelerates strongly in first quarter

By Martin Dokoupil

DUBAI (Reuters) - Bahrain's economic growth accelerated strongly in the first quarter of 2013, helped by a revival of oil output, official data showed on Sunday.

Gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, expanded 2.5 percent quarter-on-quarter in January-March, compared to a downwardly revised 0.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012.

On an annual basis, growth quickened to 4.2 percent in the first three months of 2013, the highest rate in a year, from a downwardly revised 2.5 percent in the previous quarter, the data from the Central Informatics Organization showed.

The country of 1.3 million people has based its economic strategy on becoming a regional financial hub as it lacks much of the petrodollar wealth of its Arab neighbors. But political unrest starting in 2011, in which the government has faced mainly Shi'ite-led pro-democracy protests, has hit the economy hard and raised pressure on the government to boost spending.

Output in the hydrocarbons sector, which accounts for a quarter of Bahrain's $30 billion economy, grew 1.3 percent in January-March from the previous quarter, against a mere 0.4 percent rise in the final three months of 2012.

Hydrocarbon output jumped 8.0 percent on an annual basis in the first quarter after falling by the same amount in October-December. Last year, Bahrain reported a drop in crude oil output from its key Abu Safa field, which it shares with Saudi Arabia and which contributes nearly 67 percent of budget revenue.

Growth in Bahrain's financial industry, which accounts for roughly 16 percent of GDP, slowed to 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter in January-March from 1.4 percent in the previous three months.

In the hospitality sector, which nosedived during the 2011 turmoil, output edged up by 0.5 percent in January-March, after a 0.1 percent rise in the fourth quarter.

Analysts polled by Reuters in April forecast that Bahrain's GDP growth would ease slightly to 3.3 percent in 2013 from 3.4 percent in 2012.

Hungary to raise teachers' wages in September: minister

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungary will raise teachers' wages from September, a government minister said on Sunday, in a move that could help the ruling Fidesz party cement its robust opinion poll lead ahead of a national election expected next April or May.

The announcement comes just nine days after the European Union took Hungary off the list of member states which must take measures to cut their budget deficits, removing the threat of cuts in development funds from Brussels.

Hungary had postponed the decision on the wage hikes, which are part of a new career model for teachers, to secure a favorable decision from the EU.

It also unveiled surprise measures this month to generate more than 100 billion forints ($441.32 million) in additional tax revenues, mainly from the telecoms and financial sectors, to help convince Brussels it can keep the budget deficit below the EU threshold of 3 percent of economic output.

Political analysts have said government-imposed energy utility price cuts have helped Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz keep its ratings well ahead of rivals in the opinion polls and wage increases could also support its popularity.

Zoltan Balog, minister for human resources, was quoted by the national news agency MTI as saying the rise would probably cover half of the planned total increase in teachers' wages.

The rest could come on January 1 or September 1 next year, or in two steps, but a decision will be taken later, he said.

The total monthly wage increase for a teacher with 30 years' experience would amount to about 110,000 forints ($490), Balog said, without disclosing the cost of the measure to the state budget.

According to media reports, the country of 10 million employed about 140,000 school and kindergarten teachers in 2012.

An opinion poll by Tarki carried out on June 12-21 showed that Fidesz had 26 percent support among all voters, twice as much as the main opposition party, the Socialists.
