Scottish News: Church to unveil O'Brien successor

The Roman Catholic Church is to unveil a successor to Cardinal Keith O'Brien following the cleric's fall from grace earlier this year after admitting inappropriate sexual conduct.

Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, leader of Catholics in Scotland, will introduce the new archbishop-elect of St Andrews and Edinburgh after the resignation of Cardinal O'Brien, the most senior Catholic cleric in Britain.

Cardinal O'Brien, 75, left Scotland earlier this year for a period of "spiritual renewal, prayer and penance" after admitting that his sexual conduct ''had fallen beneath the standards'' expected of him during his almost 50-year career.

He indicated that he would not contest claims by three priests and a former priest of "inappropriate behaviour" dating back to the 1980s, and intended to retire permanently from the public life of the church.

Front-runners to take over his post include Monsignor Leo Cushley, a Scot and a diplomat who has spent time in Cairo, Burundi and the United Nations and works in the Vatican's Secretariat of State.

Monsignor Patrick Burke, also Scottish and an official at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) - the Vatican department responsible for enforcing Catholic orthodoxy - has also been named as a possible successor.

The Bishop of Aberdeen, and former Abbot of Pluscarden Abbey, the Most Rev Hugh Gilbert, is believed to have an outside chance of being appointed to the post.

Cardinal O'Brien pulled out of the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI following widespread publicity over the allegations of sexual misconduct.
